Artist D C Willans spends 300 hours on artwork for office boardroom!!

When the Mach 3 Group contacted me to create an artwork for their boardroom, and they explained the concept, I knew It was going to be my biggest Challenge yet! 13 portraits, two landscape images, and a Lion all in colour, 6m x 2m! Prior to this project I had only ever painted two portraits in colour under the guidance of the great Dru Blair, so I was well and truly throwing myself in at the deep end. It is this kind of work that forces you grow, to push your boundaries and take things to the next level, I was excited slightly anxious, and grateful for the challenge ahead.

The idea for the artwork was to create something that demonstrated leadership, individuals that dominate in their field, a lions mentality, courage and determination to succeed. My client had a list of people who he thought fitted the bill, and it was my job to create a design that pulled it all together. We discussed all possibilities in regards to how the artwork would be displayed. We contemplated painting the design as a mural straight onto the wall, canvas, wooden boards or aluminium sheets. I explained that if they were going to spend a lot of money on such a big piece it made more sense to have the artwork painted as a stand alone piece which could be transported with them if they ever relocated. In the end we decided on Aluminium sheets, that would be clear coated, its a beautiful hard wearing gloss finish that really makes the artwork pop! Keep Scrolling to see some pictures of the process and videos that demonstrate my techniques.
