#artificialintelligence #103: copilot first - how to rethink education in the era of GPT

I have been doing a lot of thinking in the use of LLMs and GPT including chatGPT for education.

The traditional academic view seems to be focused on the use of chatGPT for cheating in essays.

But , I think we have an opportunity to think of something more radical.

Here is a radical idea which I have been thinking about

How would we rethink the whole curriculum based on GPT/chatGPT?

That has a two components

a) Learning methodology and?

b) an assessment methodology

see this paper

No alt text provided for this image

and fig 1 attached which looks at the components of a teaching methodology from first principles

The question then is

a) How would we break down the components of teaching

b) How would we then rethink each component of teaching in the new world driven by LLMs like GPT and chatGPT

c) Then combine these components in new ways of teaching

I have been thinking of some of these ideas with my team for my teaching and will share as we develop them.?

Update:

1. Critical thinking is a key part of the mindset to be developed as part of the curriculum. This involves education and transparency about the AI process including understanding the Rlhf algorithm ( https://lnkd.in/dtnCdDXS ).

2. The copilot first mindset enables us to solve some very complex problems through the ability to generate code. see this fascinating link and the paper (viperGPT from Columbia) https://lnkd.in/dd5d8wCZ

3. In practise, we need to look beyond chatGPT to other tools and platforms like GPT-4 and Azure Open AI services as per my previous post?

4. This is not about training AI but also about training humans to work with AI. This includes a mix of prompt engineering, critical thinking and other skills leading to a spectacular increase in productivity by using chatGPT as per MIT researchers?

5. Conor Grennan shared a great post on how to use chatGPT for creatives and non technical people . The opportunities for inclusiveness in AI, creating new employment and reducing the skills gap are mind boggling.?

6. pedagogy vs andragogy - We need to rethink also pedagogy vs andragogy as per table 1 from the paper. Also, from? the above figure, we can approach the rethinking of education in the GPT world using a co-pilot first mindset based on the following??

Concept of the learner: Learner is dependent vs Learner is self directed

Role of the teacher: Teacher takes full responsibility for determining what is to be learned v.s. Responsibility to encourage and nurture movement towards self-directedness

Role of the learner’s experience: Experience learners bring is of little worth v.s. Attach more meaning to learning they gain from experience than those they acquire passively

Primary technique of delivery: Transmittal techniques –lecture, assigned readings v.s. Experiential techniques, discussion, problem-solving cases, simulation exercises

Readiness to learn: Learn what-ever society says they ought to learn v.s. Ready to learn something when they experience a need to learn it?

How learning should be organized: Standardize curriculum, with a uniform step-by-step progression for all learners v.s. Organized around life application categories and sequenced to learners’readiness to learn

Orientation of learning: Education is a process of acquiring subject matter content v.s.Education isa process of developing increased competence to achieve their full potential

Organization of curriculum: Organized into subject matter units which follow the logic of the subject from simple to complex v.s. Organized around competency-development categories

7. Modalities: There are actually three modalities for generative AI: code - ex github copilot and copilot 365 ; images ex Dall-e2 and stable diffusion ??and GPT itself. And GPT-4 takes it to a new level with multimodality?

It is interesting to know this thought of integrating such technologies in Education curriculum, but i guess the tech must be able to meet all the criteria of physical and mental activities for growth and development, especially it would be interesting to know how such AI tech can be used in providing the learning experience of human interaction and on related human-based working models, basically on Emotional Quotient (EQ) if actually implemented ?? !

Interesting thought leadership post Ajit Jaokar Formal changes in education take time, yet outliers will no doubt leapfrog the system. And there has never been so many opportunities for the plugged in world to engage in self directed learning thanks to ubiquitous, multi faceted online channels. How fast will traditional institutions adapt? What will be the key driving force? How will education look in 5, 10, 20 years? What role will governments play and who who will lead the way? Evolution or revolution? Perhaps excitement, brilliance, disappointment and disillusionment awaits. Enthusiastic early adopters will possibly cry "Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way" (General George Patton).

Great, and very interestin insight regarding educations and creativity, which is need .In digital age, new age technology have to be needed .It is beneficial for learner for learn How to Learn pedagogy, which will make life long learning processes.
