Now that it’s over you’re probably thinking “I’m glad we only have to do that once a year.” The de-thatching, scalping, fertilizing, seeding, watering, seeding some more and hoping your winter rye comes in. You also might think “this is the year that I switch to artificial tuft.” Below are some things to consider when contemplating the switch to turf.
Benefits of Artificial Turf
- Lower Maintenance Cost
- Artificial turf requires no water
- Lawn care/service is not required to maintain as turf is nearly maintenance free
- Picture Perfect Year Round
- Environmentally Friendly
- Pet and Kid Friendly (No Harmful Pesticides or Fertilizer)
- Long Lasting. The durability of artificial grass has come a long way over the past few years. Depending on usage you may see 15 – 25 years before it needs to be replaced
Downsides of Artificial Turf
- Costly to install. Depending on the condition of your current yard and preparation required artificial turf can cost anywhere from $5.00 to $20.00 a square foot. If you live near a golf course or open land your cost can increase slightly with the underlay of a metal mesh to ensure golfers or other burrowing animals do not dig costly holes in your turf. This protection generally adds $1-$2.00 more a square foot.
- Heat. Artificial turf in a desert environment gets hot in the summer. It’s hotter than natural grass but generally does not get hotter than pavers, concrete or asphalt. There are ways to mitigate this by installing under shade trees or choosing a lighter color turf.
- While it's almost maintenance free some general maintenance is required to remove debris and other materials that are shed from your native plants and trees.
Turf and Pets
- Pet waste won’t negatively impact your artificial grass, and turf is easy to clean.
- Artificial grass is easy to clean when it comes to pet droppings. You simply scoop them up as you would on normal grass and then hose the grass off.
- Heat can be a concern in the summer months on your pet’s paws. Make sure to take standard precautions just like you would when walking your pet on an extremely hot day.
- Some pets can’t resist the urge to chew or lick an artificial grass surface, especially a newly installed one. This is typically fine, as artificial grass is often less toxic than chemically treated natural grass. It’s important to always choose non-toxic artificial grass, made or inspected in the United States.
The benefits of artificial turf can outweigh those of natural grass, especially if you’re living in an area affected by a water crisis. If you’re interested in saving money, conserving water, and creating a home with exceptional curb appeal, artificial turf may be the option you’re seeking.
