From the early modern period until well into the 19th century, imitation of nature was a central guiding principle for the visual arts - a concept that classical modernism radically broke with in the early 20th century. Today, on the other hand, many artists are once again concerned with the question of the relationship between nature and art. However, the concept of nature has radically changed in the age of the Anthropocene. As the example of climate change shows, there is no longer any untouched nature on earth today. Consequently, nature has become increasingly "artificial". The plural in the title "artificial natures" indicates that the traditional concept of nature has long since become complicated and differentiated. In the works of Aljoscha (Düsseldorf), Maxim Brandt (Berlin), Stéphanie Leblon (Ghent), Szilard Huszank (Augsburg), Erika Richter (Dresden), Maria Trezinski (Speyer), and Michael Weiss (Bad Homburg), a wide variety of motifs and styles come together to address the theme of nature, ranging from realistic to expressive, abstracting, and absurdist tendencies to utopian visions of the future.
