AI can be defined at the current form of usage as something that does some tasks which aren't completely automated, in the sense AI needs instructions, which at the current time is what AI does. Human Intelligence is still in use in terms of inputs to AI, So how intelligent or how destructive the question is, AI gives response.
The AI race primarily targets this side of AI, but AI isn't just this, it is at a large view point supposed to take humans out of the equations and doesn't form the normal day to day life a human.
Humans need help in understanding a lot of things that might help in predicting the future. That could be understanding life forms in the milky way, predicting where we could find life forms based on human evolution. It could involve in give a topology of milky way and identify points based on Stars where we could find life forms, The limitation for any form of technology other than AI do this is, even at the speed of light it takes at least a year to reach destination.
AI currently doesn't look into these things because of financial vs human needs, financial - it doesn't make a financial impact to humans, Humans - aren't generally aware of benefits or demerits in trying this.
If you look at Human evolution which have been very critically documented, probably we need to document AI evolution to understand how good it is for Human Evolution.
