My next article was to be about Generative AI and its transformative power driving innovation in various industries, though a question about bias within LLMs was asked by a gentleman in response to my last article, and I thought I should discuss about bias and ethics first.
Bias in the context of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) refers to systematic errors or unfair discriminations in the data, algorithms, or decision-making processes. These biases can manifest in various stages of AI development and deployment, including data collection, model training, and the application of AI systems.

The consequences of bias in AI can be profound and wide-reaching, affecting individuals, groups, organisations, and society at large. Here are some key consequences of bias:

Reducing biases in AI systems is very important and even more so crucial in real-time decision-making scenarios such as healthcare and finance. Addressing bias issue though involves a multi-faceted approach. Some strategies are discussed below:
Implementing these strategies requires a multidisciplinary approach, combining technical solutions with ethical considerations and societal engagement. Reducing bias is an ongoing effort that helps build more equitable and trustworthy AI systems.

I've discussed the impact of biases, what causes biases in models and AI applications, and multi-faceted strategies those may help to reduce them.

In my closing thoughts, I'd like to discuss innovation versus ethical considerations. Amongst many examples of AI innovation those have massive ethical implications, I will discuss one.
We're seeing a rapid progress in multi-modal models, their capabilities and corresponding application innovation. As an example, Deepfakes, which are synthetic media generated by deep learning models that can convincingly swap faces, simulate voices, or manipulate videos and images, is profound and multifaceted.
While deepfake technology can have legitimate applications, including in the entertainment industry, education, and art, it also poses significant ethical challenges and risks such as spreading false information, non-consensual use of images, cyberbullying and harassment, security threats, consent, blurring reality, etc.
This one example itself makes me ponder the roles and responsibilities of innovators, consumers, and regulators in navigating the ethical landscape of new technologies:
Related to point 1, I just read an article on LinkedIn this morning where the author had an interesting view. The author's view was that "AI Safety is not the property of the model as the model does not know the context and environment it is being used in". I understand the point author is making and why, but I disagree with the fact that models should not have fundamental responsibility for safety and ethics. As models mature, use cases increase, I feel it will become very important for models to have considerations to prevent misuse, misinterpretation and increase safety.
Balancing Act
We need to find a balance between encouraging technological innovation and ensuring that such advancements do not compromise ethical standards, use or societal well-being.
The EU AI Act, the first ever legal framework on AI aims to provide AI developers and deployers with clear requirements and obligations regarding specific uses of AI.
But, before regulators heavily intervene in innovation, should innovators self-regulate and impose model restrictions, even if that means potentially restricting full scope of innovation?
Should 'Ethics-first' approach take precedence over any technological innovation, its benefits, or commercial gains?
These questions arise from my internal conflict as someone who is both a staunch advocate for technology and a person who places a high value on ethical considerations.
The immediate thrill of achieving new breakthroughs in AI is undeniable; however, as innovators, considering the long-term implications is a fundamental duty that leaders must uphold.
