Artificial Intelligence

I just read a piece online about the "AI" revolution and while on the surface artificial intelligence might seem like a revelation revolution but is it really? Have we become so dependent upon tech and machine have we've allowed ourselves to become or are we allowing ourselves to become mentally lazy?

Some may believe that when we allow the mechanics of the machine do the jobs for us, it allows us as humans to perform other tasks. But then we need to ask ourselves "what then becomes our ability to perform these tasks"? Once we allow machine to do the thinking for us does our mind get the opportunity to grow in the natural progression as it has in the past or does it stunt it's growth.

Sure we all love to have devices perform tasks for us, make life simpler for us but can't it also be said that as we grow technologically that we in some way lose the ability to do what we once thought routine? Do we allow ourselves become soft and dependent on the machine that we've now turn over the reins to so to speak? Let's use auto correct for example. What if Google or Word didn't correct the spelling of that word, what then how would we know? Logic most of the time dictates that something doesn't look right. Do we just accept it or question AI's accuracy. Will there come a day when we accept the machine's interpretation of fact without question?

With the advent of innovation such as autonomous cars, would you really feel secure that you could drive and take a nap, watch TV or read your twitter or facebook page while en route ? One thing we've learned about machines, while they work well for the most part, as we all know sometimes innovation can go awry.

Lets use another example. The Boeing 737 Max, how well did AI work with that or what about the Takata airbag? Over 40 million recalled, that's right 40 million! According stats the company's faulty airbag have blasted shrapnel into drivers and passengers upon impact and some deployed without impact due to faulty propellent. Now I'm not saying that airbags don't save lives, they do and millions per year year but when the car's computer sends a false signal to deploy it becomes deadly. Okay, these 2 examples are extreme but you get my drift. As AI becomes more and more mainstream and we become more and more dependent upon it it can be said we've lost some ability to perform these simple menial tasks. Remember, that what will happen when something simple like that iRobot vacuum cleaner breaks or when you ask Siri or Alexa to do something and it won't or it provides misinformation, it happens. Dependency is not merely drug based. Food for thought and just my 2?
