Is Artificial Intelligence Really That Intelligent?

For years now, people have been talking about the extraordinary potential of Artificial Intelligence.?But is AI as intelligent as people say it is??

People have been fascinated by the prospect of artificial Intelligence for years. The idea of machines that can think and learn like humans has captivated scientists' and laypeople's imaginations. And with the recent advances in machine learning, AI is finally living up to its hype. But not everyone is convinced that AI is as intelligent as it claims to be (including me).?

Don't get me wrong - I'm not here to be an advocate against AI.?On the contrary, I'm a big enthusiast of Artificial Intelligence. From self-driving cars to digital assistants, AI is everywhere.

And now, with public access to ChatGPT-3, the hype is more significant than ever. So many people are getting their hands on artificial Intelligence, and the results are incredible and mind-blowing.

You can see on google trends that "ChatGPT" is one of the biggest trends right now, followed by the hype in posts, youtube channels, and LinkedIn - in this last one, one of the most significant discussions is "how AI will replace your job."?

Looking at this, I'm very skeptical that AIs will now be able to replace jobs fully. For sure, one segment or another will see more considerable impacts, and AI is here to assist us in several tasks that will reshape in some ways how we work.?But that is how I see it - a fascinating tool with many possibilities but not yet "intelligent" or human-like.?

Let me explain why! But before we move further into those concepts, it's essential to understand clearly the differences between knowledge and Intelligence.

  • Knowledge?can be defined as a collection of facts and information.?
  • Intelligence?is the ability to use knowledge to solve problems.?It involves things like critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

So far, AI has been able to amass a large amount of knowledge input from texts - as sources based on years of experience, observation, and study by humans - it still needs to apply this knowledge in the same way humans can. For example, it must be able to understand complex concepts and make judgments based on those concepts. Additionally, it must be able to communicate its thoughts and intentions clearly.

ChatGPT is a great example??- it is designed (and trained) to mimic human conversation and can do so convincingly. However, there are some limitations to its capabilities. For instance, ChatGPT can only hold a conversation for a few minutes without repeating itself or becoming confused.?

On the other hand, Human Intelligence is the ability to think, reason, and remember. As a result, we can understand the world around us and make decisions.?It allows us to solve problems and create new things. Intelligence makes us unique from other animals and enables us to survive in our environment.?

Ultimately, human Intelligence is complex and multi-dimensional.?There is no single definition that captures all aspects of it. So let's go back to the fundamental question -?Can artificial Intelligence think, reason, and remember??

In a short answer - No, at least right now!?Artificial Intelligence (AI) cannot think, reason, and remember as humans do. Instead, AI systems are programmed with specific goals in mind and can only act within the scope of those goals.?As a result, they lack the creativity and abstract thinking that enables humans to think and reason in a more complex way.?

AIs, by nature, need to be explicitly programmed for that particular problem to find a solution.?

AI systems can remember input information and use it to deliver results.?Still, they cannot form memories or draw conclusions from their experiences as humans can.

This helps us debunk one of the biggest myths about AI - that it can think and learn like a human being.?But the truth is, AI is only as good as the data it's given. So, providing an AI system with insufficient data will produce bad results.? Also, we must consider that AI systems are not autonomous - they require humans to provide data and instructions and develop the models necessary for pattern recognition.?

An this is the biggest problem of AIs - it's not the technology itself or its supposed "intelligence" that will considerably impact jobs, careers, and people.?

It's bias, ethics, and a misunderstanding of its capabilities and uses.?Since AI models tend to learn from the data a human gives them, if the data contains any bias or prejudice, this could be reflected in the model's output. For example, suppose a chatbot is trained in conversations between people of different genders or races. In that case, it may exhibit the same biases as those conversations do. As such, it's essential to be aware of potential biases when using AI models.

Otherwise, we might create an extensive "knowledge database" used only to mimic a predominant behavior and ideas from specific groups and individuals that will be incorporated in the "AI-powered systems" used for hiring, credit analysis, advertising, and much more.?

For example, a study by the University of Washington found that a facial recognition system was more likely to misidentify African American and Asian faces than white faces. In contrast, another study found that a machine learning system was more reasonable for giving higher risk scores to black defendants than white defendants.

Imagine what an AI would look like if trained by a specific set of beliefs, social rules, and political views like we had in different periods of our human history. Would they be culture-based and biased???Would they benefit certain "types", genders and groups?

However, while AI can be misused, it can also be used for good. For example, AI can help diagnose diseases earlier or help create more efficient transportation systems.?As long as the AI is programmed with ethical guidelines and used responsibly, it can be a powerful tool for good.

And finally, in trying to answer "Linkedin fears" about jobs?- it's important to remember that AI is still in its infancy, and there are limitations to what it can currently do. For example, AI still needs to be capable of making ethical decisions or understanding the complexities of human emotions. So while AI may eventually be able to perform some tasks better than humans, it is unlikely to replace human jobs anytime soon completely.

Despite these limitations, ChatGPT is still an impressive achievement and provides us with a glimpse into the future of Artificial Intelligence. So while AI systems are not as "intelligent" as humans, they are getting "smarter" daily. And as they evolve, they will become increasingly valuable in our everyday lives.

No matter which side you stand on, it is clear that AI is one of the most important technology trends of our time. It has the potential to revolutionize the way we do business and live our lives. However, only time will tell if AI will genuinely change the world for the better.

Let me know your thoughts!
