CANADA LAGGING BEHIND IN A.I
Once a promising leader, Canada’s artificial-intelligence strategy is now a fragmented laggard.
SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE
“Are we alone in the universe?” is one of humanity’s biggest questions. But now, some of the world’s top scientists and tech companies are setting out to answer an even bigger question: “Are we being?visited?”?Will artificial intelligence help us find evidence of UFOs?
AI AND SPECIES CONSERVATION
Artificial intelligence has been identified as one of the top three emerging technologies in conservation, helping protect species around the world.?Five ways AI is saving wildlife – from counting chimps to locating whales.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SURVEY - What to Expect?
I will try to cover 10 to 20 links in a given issue, which will likely be around every second or third day.
To get an idea of what this might look like, see the first?issue here.?This Newsletter was born on February 22nd, 2022.
Share this article if you think you know someone who might enjoy it.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND CREATIVITY
Will Artificial intelligence change and challenges what it means to be creative?
AI AND COPYRIGHT - THE DEBATE CONTINUES
The US Copyright Office says an AI can’t copyright its art. Recently Steven Thaler’s AI-created image didn’t include an element of “human authorship” — a necessary standard, it said, for protection.
DEEPMIND TRAINS AI TO CONTROL COMPUTERS LIKE HUMANS DO
DeepMind trains agents to use keyboard and mouse commands with pixel and Document Object Model (DOM) observations to control computers, achieving state-of-the-art and human-level mean performance across all tasks on the MiniWob++ benchmark.
About My Work
Did you know, I also run other related Newsletters? The front page of my Newsletters are small treasure droves of articles now.
Or, if you want to see all the articles in this series of Newsletters go to the main page here. The sample size is currently modest.
To my knowledge, I’m among?just a handful of indie media startups?developing multiple Newsletters simultaneously. This is my only gig, I’m trying to actually make a living $(or maybe $$) on this!

AI ASSISTANCE FOR ANESTHESIOLOGISTS
A new deep-learning algorithm trained to optimize doses of propofol to maintain unconsciousness during general anesthesia could augment patient monitoring.
A new artificial intelligence advance could continuously monitor patient unconsciousness and commensurately optimize the dose of propofol, providing helpful assistance to the doctor.
AI IN CYBERSECURITY ACCELERATES INTO AN ARMS RACE
AI has already seen some early successes in cybersecurity. Increasingly, companies such as FireEye, Microsoft and Google are developing innovative AI approaches to detect malware, stymie phishing campaigns and monitor the spread of disinformation. The average business receives?10,000 alerts every day?from the various software tools it uses to monitor for intruders, malware and other threats.
FACEBOOK’S AI CHIEF YANN LECUN SAYS SELF-SUPERVISED LEARNING CAN BUILD THE METAVERSE
Meta’s AI chief says self-supervised learning can build the metaverse and maybe even human-level AI. LeCun, VP and chief AI scientist of Meta (formerly Facebook), believes that the next AI revolution will come about when AI systems no longer require?supervised learning. No longer will they rely on carefully labeled data sets that provide ground truth in order for them to gain an understanding of the world and perform their assigned tasks.

A.I. WILL POWER THE CREATOR ECONOMY
Neosapience gets $21.5M to use AI-powered synthetic avatars for creators. Artificial intelligence-powered voice and video technologies have been gaining steady popularity in recent years. A Korean startup called?Neosapience?has developed a synthetic voice and video platform,?Typecast, that lets users turn text into a video without recording and editing in a studio.?
A.I IS ENHANCING NEUROSURGEON TRAINING
Artificial intelligence tutoring outperforms expert instructors in neurosurgical training. Machine learning algorithms enhanced technical performance and learning outcomes during simulated brain tumor removal. The Neurosurgical Simulation and Artificial Intelligence Learning Centre at The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital) recruited seventy medical students to perform virtual brain tumour removals on a neurosurgical simulator. Students were randomly assigned to receive instruction and feedback by either an AI tutor or a remote expert instructor, with a third control group receiving no instruction.
Shockingly, students who received VOA (An AI-powered tutor called the Virtual Operative Assistant) instruction and feedback learned surgical skills 2.6 times faster and achieved 36 per cent better performance compared to those who received instruction and feedback from remote instructors.
HOW BIG WILL ROBOT MARKET GET?
AI or artificial intelligence in robotics is the integration of AI technology with robots enabling them to more efficiently perform repetitive tasks without human intervention. AI also enables robots to establish communication with other robots and humans. For companies, robots are proving to be more efficient and at the same time a cheaper labor. Global Artificial Intelligence (AI) Robots Market to Reach $21.4 Billion by 2026.
A.I IN THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY TOWARDS CLOUD KITCHENS
A Startup is developing a restaurant management platform using machine learning and computer vision technology for restaurants.?Agot AI?is a food-service-focused forerunner in the computer vision (AI) technology revolution that is reshaping industries worldwide.
The Pennsylvania-based company claims that it has created a solution that verifies order accuracy in real-time for online ordering and alerts personnel if an order has to be corrected. According to?Market Study Report, the global restaurant management software industry is expected to grow about 15% annually to $6.95 billion by 2025. In 2021, 60% of Americans purchased takeout or delivery at least once every week, with 31% using a third-party delivery service.
DEEPMIND OPEN-SOURCES DM:21: A DEEP LEARNING MODEL FOR QUANTUM CHEMISTRY
Deepmind Open-sources ‘DM21’, a neural network model for mapping electron density to chemical interaction energy, a critical component of quantum mechanical modeling. DM21 outperforms standard models on various benchmarks, and it’s accessible as a PySCF simulation framework addition.?
In a?paper published in Science, the model was detailed. The energy density functional component of Density Functional Theory (DFT), which describes the quantum mechanical behavior of molecules, is approximated by DM21 using a neural network.
