We’ve all seen them—movies about artificial intelligence that seem like the stuff of science fiction. From the beloved Wall-E to the more recent Ex Machina, AI movies have always had us dreaming of a world where robots do our bidding. But what if some of these movies were more than just fantasies? What if there really are AI movies that have come to life? Let’s take a look at some movies that might not be so far off from reality after all.?
Wall-E (2008)?
This Pixar classic follows robot Wall-E as he embarks on an adventure to save humanity. While we’re still a long way off from having a robot like Wall-E in real life, the movie has certainly inspired many engineers and scientists to work towards creating robots with similar capabilities. In fact, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has already created a robot called “cheetah” that can run faster than Usain Bolt and jump over obstacles!?
Ex Machina (2015)?
This Academy Award winning film tells the story of Caleb, an employee at a tech company who is chosen by his boss to evaluate Ava, an artificially intelligent android. In addition to inspiring conversations about ethics in AI development, this movie has also spurred conversations about how much autonomy robots should be given in decision making processes. This is an issue that is being actively discussed in the robotics industry today and one that will continue to be debated for years to come.?

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)?
In this blockbuster hit, Tony Stark creates an artificial intelligence system named Ultron in order to protect Earth from alien threats. While we don’t yet have a robotic army at our disposal (thankfully!), this movie has sparked debate about how AI could be used for defense purposes. There are currently several research projects underway exploring this very question, including one at UC Berkeley funded by DARPA and designed to develop autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles for military use.?
Skynet:
The Terminator Franchise: Skynet is the fictional neural net-based conscious computer system bent on destroying humanity in the Terminator series. While we don’t yet have an AI system capable of such destruction, there are several deep learning projects underway. For example, Google’s DeepMind project is an artificial general intelligence platform designed to improve computer vision and natural language processing, allowing machines to learn and adapt like humans do.?
It may surprise you to learn that some of our favorite AI movies have actually come true—at least in part! From Wall-E inspiring cheetah robots capable of running faster than Usain Bolt, to Avengers sparking discussions about using AI for defense purposes, it seems like science fiction isn't such a distant dream after all. That being said, it's important not get carried away with these ideas; while technology can help us create amazing things, it's important not forget that ultimately we are responsible for how it is used and how it affects other people around us.
