How AI Is Transforming the Practice of Law
Over the course of the last two years, we have written several times about the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and how it will not only make legal work faster but also more efficient. By automating labor-intensive tasks, law firms are able to focus their time, energy, and resources on their clients. Ideally, this drives down the cost and makes legal help more accessible.
Now, as more law firms have implanted AI, we can look back and see how it has been applied and whether it is working to increase affordability and access. While many aspects of AI have still mainly been left unutilized, more and more attorneys are now using state-of-art technology and platforms to transform their business.
Rethinking AI
Lawyers once fearful that AI would take over their legal tasks are breathing a sigh of relief. As AI is put into real-time, legal staff now see that it is more of a complement to their work than a replacement.
AI is a form of assistive technology for most legal practices that can aid in fast, accurate research, provide insights and analytics, and can automate otherwise tedious and time-consuming processes.
Automation to Augmentation
As discussed in Thomson Reuter’s recent article “How AI and machine learning is shaping legal strategy," there has been a shift from the idea that AI would result in full automation to the concept of augmentation.
AI (and machine learning) is a tool for lawyers and other professionals to use. It can assist with numerous tasks. For lawyers, this may mean less time focusing on administrative duties (like billing and document generation) and more time focusing on litigation.

Improving the Legal Industry
Artificial intelligence is not just purely for simple tasks; it can also help attorneys practice more effectively. AI has the revolutionary ability to help attorneys do their due diligence.
For instance, it can process a large amount of data in a short amount of time or use prediction technology to predict the outcome of litigation. Certain programs can help search for trends and patterns by jurisdiction or even by the individual judge. Truly AI is nothing new, but it is getting smarter, easier to use, and applicable to more situations.
Largely Untapped
As noted in Thomson Reuter’s article, much of the AI world remains untapped. There are areas in every practice that could be improved with the use of AI, but we haven’t quite gotten there yet.
Legal tech companies, however, are quick to fill the gaps. Startups that are leveraging AI are gathering billions in funding and have no plans of stopping. From platforms that draft contracts to programs that can analyze those contracts and potential risks. Undoubtedly there is room to grow in the arena.
