Artificial Intelligence & Its Roots

Artificial Intelligence is the hot topic now a days but;

• What is AI?
• What it really means?

Starting with the basics, AI means that accomplishing the tasks that would normally humans would do, but instead this is being done by a machine / computer.

For example, how do you decide whether you need an umbrella today when you leave for work today. This is something that can be done based on the current factors like weather conditions and weather forecast.

Now every discussion that starts with AI ends on Data.

Data

Considering the same example, in order to decided whether you will need umbrella today or no, you consider the

1. Current Weather Condition
2. Weather Forecast

These are the best examples of data that you required in order to decide.

Connecting the DOTS

AI is something that is accomplished or decision made by machine.

Coming back to same example of umbrella decision. How would you make a machine to realise / understand:

1. What the weather is?
2. How many types of weather conditions are there which leads to decision of carrying an umbrella with you today?

All of this is done by Data Science.

Data Science

Now that you know what Data is in a particular AI decision, and how to make a machine understand what that data actually means; this leads to next step which is Data Science.

In simple words, you use that data and organise that data in particular format or understandable form.

This is known as data Collection / Preparation / Transformation.

Data Science means using this well organised, structured and understandable data to make sense. In other words, you use this data to understand what it exactly means.

For example partly cloudy / sunny / cloudy weather conditions indicate a different outcome depending on some other factors like temperature drop or rise over time. Furthermore, probability of rain etc.

Data science helps you connect these dots and come up with a particular answer.

For example, you have 6 connecting dots. The way those dots are connection will help you understand which shape these dots would represent. This is what you know as Data Model.

AI & Data

These models help you determine that particular shape when these dots are connection in a particular way. Models are trained on the basis of some data, like different shapes that represent a SQUARE or CUBE.

Now the simplest task that you might think of considering this example of data is to identify and label a particular shape. Once these models are trained, you use these models on larger data sets know as Data Lakes.

These data lakes serve as Input for an AI Model.

AI Model

AI Model is bit like data models but the only difference is that AI models serve as determining the particular factor that you might need to focus on to grow your profit or establish your business in a resource efficient and productive way in a shorter timespan to have an competitive advantage in a particular line of business.

The better these models are trained and tuned, the better the outcome would be.
