Artificial intelligence: Good, bad, and ugly

What a week it was! Where should I begin?

Let's start with this article from The Atlantic on generative AI. For my fellow writers out there, this concerns all of us. Because we simply will never know for certain if our work has been used to train the AI chatbots, so that they can in turn learn to produce humanlike answers to random questions.

Speaking of chatbots, it should come as no surprise that these tools are far from being intelligent. But sometimes, it is still pretty shocking to see how far off they can be.

According to Gizmodo, Google’s AI-powered Search Generative Experience (SGE) has produced some troubling answers, including justifications for slavery and genocide and the positive effects of banning books. In one instance, Google gave cooking tips for Amanita ocreata, a poisonous mushroom known as the angel of death.

I mean ... who would have thought? Perhaps time to think twice before using such a tool for education?

And this VentureBeat article captured it so well.

"... when combined with the distorting effects of generative inbreeding, we could face a future where our culture is stifled by an invisible force pulling towards the past combined with genetic deformities that don’t faithfully represent the creative thoughts, feelings and insights of humanity."

What then will become of our society when it becomes devoid of human ingenuity and purpose ... when our culture is influenced more by algorithms than humans?

When it comes to deploying AI in financial services, the question around responsible AI is even more crucial than ever. Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with Stu Bradley — SVP Fraud & Security Intelligence at 赛仕软件 on trust, technology evolution, and digitization in banking.

While we are still on the topic of AI, check out my recent article on leveraging AI as a competitive advantage in spend management, and building a future-forward stack based not on solving for yesterday’s challenges, but tomorrow’s needs.

How is your organization driving responsible innovation that can adapt to the changing world?

In this week's One Vision ...

Not a day goes by when we don’t hear something about artificial intelligence (AI). From deploying generative AI in the newsroom to using AI to help improve sustainability, there is no shortage of energy and buzz around the emerging technology. When we come to think of it, AI is, and has been, all around us. From the moment we pick up our smartphone and authenticate via thumbprint or facial recognition, check our emails and news feeds, to navigating traffic and boarding, our day-to-day experience is already greatly shaped by AI.

In this episode of One Vision, I chat with?Tim Lebel, VP and Head of Spend Products at?SAP Concur, on how organizations can drive towards a data-driven and intelligent future in spend management with AI.

Give this episode a listen and let us know what you think.

Responsible AI is vital because it ensures that artificial intelligence technologies are developed, deployed, and used in ways that prioritize ethical considerations, human well-being, and societal impact. The conversation you had with Stu Bradley was truly enlightening.

Thoughtful as always,?Theodora Lau. As with anything new, blind fear or blind excitement don't do us any favors. The reality is much more gray, much more nuanced. Enjoyed this entire piece, and especially love any chance to see you and?Stu Bradley?chat.

Watch-Learn-Scale will be the mantra ! Good one Theo !
