As technology advances, AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT are reshaping all aspects of life, including the way we communicate science. Tasks that used to take days, weeks, or even months can now be completed in mere seconds and minutes. The revolution isn't on the horizon - it's well underway. Depending on your predisposition, recent advances can invoke feelings of dread, awe, apathy or empowerment - occasionally all at the same time! AI technology might not have the timeless quality as the past and present environments we study, but it's definitely here to stay — a golden spike in our collective evolution. And like any tool, there are benefits and pitfalls to consider.

1 年Another tool in the toolbox. AI is obviously still in its infancy but like most tech, you can't put that genie back in the bottle once out. The real questions are how best to use it for your tasks at hand, does it help or hinder, and ultimately it's the competency and skill of the "driver" behind it. I recall similar conversations, fear, misunderstanding, and uncertainty when moving from paper sections to digital, from explicit modeling to implicit, manual mapping to drone photogrammetry/geophysics, stacks of textbooks to internet, etc. etc. With all the improvements in tech, ability to rapidly collect and interpret data, and so forth there is still rubbish work and amazing work being performed. It's not the tech's fault, only a combination of competency, time, and budget of the humans being behind it. Personally, I think communications are in a similar boat. Can it help generate content fast, yes but at what cost? If the content is just repeating what's known, not thought provoking, or flat out wrong, the result of engagement will be the same regardless if a human wrote it or AI. So if it saves you 10 mins, hours, or acts as a muse to get the ideas flowing, good on'ya!

1 年I cannot believe any ethical geologist would use such a thing. I fear that our traditional peer-reviewed scientific publications will become inundated with AI nonsense, especially from people thinking AI is a useful tool to improve their English skills.

1 年It could be helpful to improve texts and for information mining. But, as usual, its best use is in the hands of responsible humans. Responsible users will use AI in good ways... responsible users.

1 年I look forward to hearing what services are worth paying to use. So far what I’ve used for free is fairly basic in its results like a chat gpt app on the computer or iphone.
