Artificial Intelligence and cognitive computing

Cognitive computing and AI are powering digital evolutions by making sense of unstructured data stage security.

The term Artificial intelligence, or AI, was coined in 1950s. With the advent of computer technology, researchers were enamored with the possibilities that in near future machines could learn, just like their human counterparts, and they would be able to adapt to general-purpose tasks without any kind of human intervention. This vision of researchers gave birth to the term ‘AI’. It turned out that replicating the human brain is actually a difficult task. Yet, over the years, we have seen great progress in AI. Today, several technologies are being applied to AI such as neural networking and predictive analytics, amongst these technologies; cognitive computing is proving to be most effective.

Cognitive computing: An innovation accelerator

Cognitive computing is another subfield under AI; it refers to computing that is focused on logical reasoning and understanding at a higher level. Cognitive computing deals with conceptual and symbolic information rather than just data or sensor streams, thereby helping in making high-level decisions in complex situations. Cognitive computing systems run on multiple technologies including:

  • Natural language queries and processing
  • Real-time computing
  • Machine learning algorithms

These technologies allow cognitive systems to go through stockpiles of structured and unstructured data. Cognitive systems can analyze a huge amount of data that is created by connected devices with diagnostic and predictive data analytics tools. This helps in deriving valuable insights that would take even the most intelligent human more than a lifetime of reading and research to discover. Cognitive systems have the ability to learn continuously when more information is made available to them, just like humans do.

The following are the advantages of cognitive computing:

Providing Personalized Service

An organization can use cognitive technologies for searching and analyzing the customer’s data sources, which encompasses their driving history, credit score, etc., thereby creating a transparent 360-degree view of the customer. Empowered by this information, organizations can make a justifiable offer that aligns with the customer’s needs and incomes. Cognitive computing can help sales teams improve customer satisfaction and drive business growth.

Detecting Product Safety Issues

Cognitive computing holds great potential when it comes to assessing product performance. By monitoring usage data and crash reports, cognitive computing technologies can easily identify the source of a device malfunction, thereby determining the best course of corrective action. Product issues can have a serious impact on businesses. This is especially true when product issues are related to safety or if these issues have caused any injury. Cognitive computing helps in identifying emerging product issues before they escalate. This helps in protecting reputations, customer loyalty and money.

IT departments are currently dealing with gaps between data collection, insights and action. Cognitive computing is empowering IT departments and digital businesses to address these problems and boost performance. Organizations should embrace this technology to their advantage as it is going to be a major technological disrupter in near future.

[Detecting Product Safety Issues] Even if current AI development shows a true and deep capability to learn and 'discover' hidden rules from big data - mostly unstructured - analysis, the issue remains the data collection itself. Considering cars crashes, detailed information about the accident circumstances are rarely available.
