Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) Replace Data Science? Really?
Recently, I attended a seminar on data science where someone from the audience raised a question about the future of data science. He wondered if AI, which seems to be replacing everything and everyone, could also replace data science as a term or data scientists themselves.
First and foremost, we need to understand the concepts of AI and data science. Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the development of systems that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as natural language processing, image recognition, and machine learning. On the other hand, data science involves the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data to extract meaningful information and drive decision-making.
AI utilizes an existing knowledge base. When using an AI tool like ChatGPT, for example, We need to input each question or module one by one as a prompt. However, once ChatGPT provides new output, it needs to be checked and cross-verified. Without knowledge of data science, a person would struggle to understand the output and find it difficult to resolve or modify the answer.
Therefore, AI cannot replace a data scientist in the process of evolution. Instead, it supplements the process by providing existing information in a customized way based on the prompts and inputs.
AI is not expected to entirely replace data science. Instead, AI technologies and data science work hand in hand to derive insights, make predictions, and solve complex problems.
Individuals with data science expertise will have more time to understand and implement other strategic decisions, as AI improves efficiency and reduces errors by minimizing human intervention.
AI can significantly enhance the capabilities of data scientists by automating repetitive tasks, uncovering patterns in large datasets, and providing advanced analytics and predictive modelling techniques. This synergy allows data scientists to focus on higher-level tasks such as formulating hypotheses, designing experiments, and interpreting results.
While AI can automate certain aspects of data science, it does not eliminate the need for skilled data scientists who possess domain knowledge, critical thinking skills, and the ability to contextualize and interpret data. Data scientists are responsible for defining problems, designing analytical approaches, validating results, and communicating insights to stakeholders.

In summary, AI complements data science by providing powerful tools and techniques, but it is unlikely to replace the field altogether. Data scientists will continue to play a crucial role in extracting value from data and driving meaningful business outcomes.
