Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a disruptive force across industries. From health care to finance, A.I. is transforming the way businesses operate and compete in the market.
One industry that is particularly vulnerable to A.I. disruption (as well as the opportunities presented by it) is the business consulting industry. Leading consulting firms like Deloitte , Accenture , PwC , EY , McKinsey & Company , Bain & Company , and Kearney have already jumped into AI head on, exploring both internal applications and client facing solutions using the technology.
As I've written about before , the consulting industry is huge, and it's based on an old business model that's ripe for change. Business consultants who provide expert advice on strategy development and process improvements sit squarely in the crosshairs of disruption.
Here are three key trends that threaten the consulting industry because they will commoditize the value of consultants and the firms that charge exorbitant rates for their time:
Here's a practical example of how we are digitizing business processes at Praxie using the power of AI:

Reinventing Consulting
So what can consultants and consulting firms to do differentiate themselves in a world of artificial intelligence?
While A.I. is poised to disrupt the business consulting industry, there are several hurdles that exist before we see widespread adoption of the technology and related A.I.-driven processes.
One of the biggest challenges is the lack of trust in A.I.-powered solutions. Many businesses are hesitant to rely on A.I. for critical decisions because they don't fully understand how A.I. algorithms work or how reliable they are. This means that businesses may need to invest in education and training to build trust in A.I.-powered solutions. That's an area where consultants can help.
Instead of fighting A.I., consultants and consulting firms can also embrace A.I. in their service delivery and offerings. By using A.I. tools like ChatGPT and others to support market research, analysis, and report writing, consultants can gain both dramatic efficiencies and also elevate the quality of their work.
Whether a new technology is seen as "disruptive" may be in the eye of the beholder. Consulting firms have an opportunity to use it to disrupt business as usual before being disrupted themselves.

1 年Soren Kaplan thanks for this insightful piece on the potential to disrupt or be disrupted by something we clearly can’t ignore. Hope you are doing well- it’s been a while!

1 年Soren, a very well composed article. However, this is not new news. As an IBM emploee, I heard about this very matter in April of 1986. At that time I was in the midst of earning my MSOD from USF. With lots of input from the above mentioned orgaizations, I could not help but hurl lots of questions towards the presenter about the affects on organizations and what the effects would be on society, both in general and organizational. One of the answers I got was," . . . we'll just have to wait and see." I've waited more than 30 plus years for an article such as yours to emerge. In the wrong hands, I think AI is terribly dangerous. Used for the benefit of human well being, I think AI will surpass our wildest expections concerning its useful possibilities. We must be wary, though. Humankind has a nasty habit of turning useful tools into atrocious weapons. Sometimes it is just wise to pop up our periscopes, keep our heads down, and our powder dry. All that aside, you've produced an excellent thought provoker.

1 年As always Soren, that's a bright analysis. One thing AI will never do is motivating teams & execute a strategy. We, as consultants, can bring huge value on these fields. Best regards my friend.
