The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Debrief | Issue #3 (Sep 2023)
Our September edition of The DX Debrief explores the dynamic impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology across the federal government and how agencies are slowly and steadily incorporating and adopting the tech for their mission goals.
There is no doubt that Artificial Intelligence (AI), which are machines that can solve problems and make decisions independent of manual intervention, is an incredibly powerful technology. The potential it holds in autonomous computing and the ability to take action complements and enhances human capacity, often limited by time and attention. With these inventions come new challenges, such as mitigating biases hidden in the training data for machine learning or deep learning models or determining the type and level of regulation necessary to harness the power responsibly.
You may be most familiar with its customer service and ticketing capabilities. The 2020 Center for Digital Government Survey found that public officials in states, cities, and counties are either already adopting AI technologies or planning to do so. The obvious benefit may be task automation, but what it really comes down to is consumer experience. Your Amazon Prime delivery may already be fast – but seeing that your recent exciting (and likely completely unnecessary) purchase is only three (3) stops away makes you feel that much better.
Artificial Intelligence can potentially deliver and scale immense benefits, such as cost savings, improved services, and data-driven decision-making. With these opportunities there are also inherent risks across cybersecurity threats, algorithms biases, privacy management, and data quality. The government has a crucial responsibility towards its usage and mitigating these risks by implementing robust cybersecurity measures, ensuring transparency in AI systems, and addressing bias through responsible AI design and regulation. Agencies can harness this transformative technology by balancing between the tech’s potential benefits and associated risks.
Our AI Debrief brings you some of the power-packed pieces relevant to the federal government so that your agencies can leverage AI in an informed way. Our collective responsibility and right approach towards the technology will ensure that AI becomes a force for good and will guide us through the complexities of new emerging technological requirements while aligning with the government’s core mission to serve its citizens better.
