Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly emerged as a transformational technology. While we debate its consequences, it is crucial to understand that AI's optimal role is to augment human intelligence, not replace it. I believe that as AI's level of intelligence increases, humans will evolve and become even more resilient. Perhaps too resilient to eliminate. AI will make us superhumans; it will 100x our productivity.
The Complementarity of AI and Human Intelligence
AI excels at repetitive tasks, data analysis, and pattern recognition at a speed and scale that humans cannot match. However, human intelligence brings emotional intelligence, creativity, critical thinking, and understanding of context, aspects that are still beyond the reach of AI. A harmonious blend of both could achieve wonders.
For instance, in healthcare, AI algorithms can analyze medical imaging faster and with higher precision, but the empathy, judgment, and communication skills of a healthcare professional are irreplaceable. AI won't entirely replace doctors, but it will make doctors super-productive and help them complete repetitive tasks in record time and accuracy. This is the same case for lawyers. We will still need lawyers but AI will be able to perform several legal tasks thus augmenting the lawyer.
AI as a Tool to Enhance Human Productivity
AI systems can automate mundane tasks, giving humans more time to engage in complex problem-solving and strategic thinking. An excellent example is the use of AI in customer support. Chatbots handle simple queries, allowing human agents to deal with more complex issues, thus improving overall efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Ethics and AI: The Human Touch
AI systems make decisions based on the data and algorithms they're fed, lacking a moral compass. Humans are necessary for ensuring ethical and fair decision-making. For instance, an AI used for hiring may inadvertently introduce bias if the data it was trained on is biased. Human oversight is essential to prevent such issues. In other words, AI can never become humans, no matter their level of intelligence. At the end of the day, they were created by humans.

Limitations of AI
Despite its vast capabilities, AI still has limitations. AI performs well on specific tasks it's trained for but struggles with tasks outside its training data or understanding context. A human interacting with AI can provide this context, directing the AI tool towards a useful outcome.
Take the case of AlphaGo, an AI developed by DeepMind that outplayed the world champion in the complex game of Go. While AlphaGo demonstrated impressive strategic thinking, it wouldn't understand the cultural significance of Go or even know that it's playing a game!
The Future: Collaboration, not Competition
The future of AI should not be a zero-sum game between AI and humans but a mutually beneficial partnership. We should aim for 'Augmented Intelligence' where AI enhances human decision-making and frees up time for tasks that require a human touch.
Educational institutions and businesses should prepare the workforce for this change by promoting skills that will complement AI, such as problem-solving, creativity, empathy, and ethical decision-making.
In conclusion, as we venture further into the AI era, it's essential to remember that AI's role should be to augment our abilities and not to make us redundant. The power of AI should be harnessed to lift humanity as a whole, fostering a symbiotic relationship that blends the best of both worlds. By doing so, we can unlock unparalleled opportunities to innovate, create, and elevate our shared global society.
