Artificial Intelligence (AI) 2017 Article Update to 2025

In 2017, I published an article which describes the influence of Artificial Intelligence in our everyday life. Artificial intelligence had already been making its presence known, but very few people recognized it for what it truly was, science fiction more than practical applications.

In 2025, the timeline over artificial intelligence paints a vastly different picture. Now we have artificial intelligence in a very matured manner and with unprecedented pace of evolution, this article goes back and reviews how each domain of artificial intelligence weaves together and has impacts on other domains.

It is the simulation of human intelligence, in which the machine or computer shows that intelligence. Artificial intelligence has grown from simple rule-based automation to much more advanced generative models that are able to create human such as re-text, images and in fact, even code!

In all my articles I like to use examples. In this writeup, we will see how artificial intelligence has improved in a number of sectors and how these sectors all converge to form a more unified technological system.

Virtual Assistants and Smart Homes

Virtual assistants are no longer AI-driven smartphones, they have themselves been smartened up into smart homes with artificial intelligence deployment. Now, these assistants have already seamlessly integrated with smart home devices in order to optimize energy usage, control security systems, even work with healthcare wearables so they can monitor wellness. To optimise health benefits and relaxation, the current form of biometric data analysis from wearable devices – speech and visual commands to control lighting, temperature, and entertainment – is now possible with a smart home assistant.

Video Games and Careers

The capability of video game artificial intelligence to generate highly adaptive gaming experiences has extended to changing career development. Now, there is a wide range of industries and commercial use cases where virtual reality training simulations powered by artificial intelligence are widely used, from medical procedures to logistics management. Now, corporate training has become gamified, and gamification of skill development is in place, so learning is better engaged and effective. In addition, artificial intelligence is also used for game environment generated in the city planning and smart city design.

Autonomous Vehicles and Transportation Networks

On the other hand, the evolution of autonomous vehicle technology has perfectly matched that of artificial intelligence backed traffic management system in smart cities. Intelligent traffic lights, public transportation networks and urban surveillance cameras are now using the same type of communication system that facilitates communication between self-driving cars and make driving safer and traffic flow more efficient. Artificial intelligence-based route optimization also benefits the logistics companies by reducing their fuel consumption and delivering faster to the final mile.

Predictive Analytics in Retail and Travel

Now, not only can buyers be recommended items to purchase, but retail can also help you plan your travel. Systems with artificial intelligence can anticipate the needs of the consumer and even talk about the destination, accommodation and even the dining options keeping in mind the consumer’s tastes. Artificial intelligence backed demand forecasting is being used by Airlines and Hotels so that they can use the same data to optimise pricing and provide a seamless and cost-effective experience to travellers.

Fraud Detection and Security Systems

Fraud detection systems heavily rely on Artificial intelligence which is linked with smart city surveillance, or the financial security system. These surveillance cameras now use artificial intelligence to watch and detect if someone had a threat in mind, using facial expressions and body language. Similar to banks in both physical and digital space use, biometric and behavioural analytics are used to prevent fraud to guard higher security.

Artificial Intelligence in Customer Support and Relationships

These are also integrated in customer support through artificial intelligence based chatbots and virtual assistants, but relationships are also included. The relationship coaching tools leverage artificial intelligence to analyse patterns of communication and offers them personalized advise that enables improve their interaction both with the people and with the people at the workplaces. The concept of customer service chat bots can now detect the emotional tone and then give response accordingly, which is similar to a human-to-human talk.

Artificial Intelligence in Entertainment and Media Creation

It has become acceptable to ingest personalized content recommendations based on artificial intelligence because it’s used to deliver content in the first place on streaming services, but now artificial intelligence is being used to create original music, artwork and films. Companies are starting to incorporate artificial intelligence-generated content into their marketing campaigns where the ads are based on the individual consumers. Reluctantly, social media interaction is changed by virtual influencers created with the help of artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence in Logistics and Health Monitoring

The logistics systems are integrated with healthcare and come with artificial intelligence to manage efficient supply chain. Artificial intelligence is used to predict and control the shortage of essential medicines in supply chains serving medical deliveries. Currently, smart logistics systems also help hospitals by allowing supply to be delivered to the hospitals through artificial intelligence powered robots and drones.

Artificial Intelligence in Smart Cities and Public Safety

Smart cities have interconnected technologies which guarantee safety, efficiency, and sustainability and artificial intelligence continues to be indispensable for it. Today surveillance systems interface with police files that allow expeditious crimes. Artificial intelligence enabled environmental monitoring on the streets deems faster, cleaner, healthier urban cities. These advancements deliver on a degree of urban experience more coupled together, yet concurrently lived by the public safety, convenience and sustainability.

Health, Fitness and Workplace Wellbeing by Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is used in wearable devices to monitor the health metrics in real time so that fitness and wellness can be tracked. Now, artificial intelligence driven analytics are influencing the workplace environment in which company optimizes employee wellbeing, these insights. In corporate settings, artificial intelligent based wellness programs are employed for employee wellbeing and lower stress.

Artificial Intelligence in Careers and Education

Jobs are now being replaced by artificial intelligence by automating the work, while at the same time suitable jobs are to be created. Now, machines are choosing job paths fit for a person’s skill using machine learning driven job platforms, while artificial intelligence driven education tools are giving personal learning experiences. Artificial intelligence driven simulations are integrated in corporate training programs which make employees upskill fast in a tough job market.

The Future of Artificial Intelligence

In the last ten years artificial intelligence has become exponential in generative artificial intelligence and the technological evolution of the autonomous systems itself. Artificial intelligence models like GPT-5, multimodal artificial intelligence, and self-improving learning system will keep rising higher, and the artificial intelligence’s influence will only advance. The next decade will be even more revolutionary due to the continued integration of artificial intelligence with the Internet office Things, fifth generation wireless networks and quantum computing.

Futuristic concept of artificial intelligence is no longer: artificial intelligence is already playing a part in our lives, redefining the ways we serve and live. It has been a journey from 2017 to 2025, and the potential is endless also as artificial intelligence will continue to connect itself with all aspects of our lives.

Interesting perspective Raj Kanda on AI’s evolution, especially the way different domains are converging. The impact is undeniable, but I think the conversation around ethical risks, biases, and the human and AI balance needs just as much focus. Tech is moving fast, but are we keeping up with responsible governance? Would be great to hear your thoughts on that side of AI’s future
