As Chair of the recently launched British Educational Research Association (BERA) Artificial and Human Intelligence Research Group, I just wanted to notify everyone that we are holding a series of events during the academic year 2019/20 that might be of interest. First of all, here's a link to the group, which you can join if you are a member of BERA. (Non-members can also attend our events, although they won't get the discounted rate).

The first will be held on 28th November 2019 and asks what is the future for artificial intelligence in education? It is going to be held at Brunel University, and is a day-long workshop. There are talks from me and Dimitris Parapadakis (Westminster University) planned, where we will run everyone through the latest science on technological developments and theory, and also practical activities mapping out the field and thinking through various social and policy issues relating to the philosophy and ethics of AI use in education. We are also planning a student presentation of a cutting-edge doctoral project, as capacity building amongst early-career researchers is very important to us. You can learn more about it and book here (places are going fast so best to book sooner rather than later). Event bursaries for travel are available on application.

Our spring event is going to be held on 6th February 2020 at the University of Westminster. It asks the question Great Expectations: What should artificial intelligence be doing for us? Speakers and discussion panel members include Spencer Marsden and Robert Issit from the BBC Blue Room demonstrating the BBC's latest research in AI technology which is relevant to children and young people, Manolis Mavrikis from the UCL Knowledge Lab talking about interactive AI processes, and Ansgar Koene from Nottingham University talking about fairness and equality in AI use. We are currently finalising arrangements and a booking link will be posted here very soon.
Our summer event is going to be held on 5th May 2020 at Jesus College, Cambridge University, and sponsored by the digital education company Sparx, which you can learn more about at https://sparx.co.uk. It is a joint event with three other BERA groups: Educational Technology, Philosophy of Education, and the Religion, Values and Education group. The title of the event is Being Human: Education in a technological age and it is going to focus on the role of human relationships within digital learning. Confirmed speakers include Julian Huppert of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, Rupert Wegerif of Cambridge University, and Dan Sandhu, CEO of Sparx, and there are likely to be a couple of other interesting speakers as well. Again, a link will be posted up here once we have finalised arrangements, but in the meantime you might want to save the date.
We look forward to seeing you at these events over the next academic year, and perhaps if you are a BERA member you'll also join up to the group, so you receive our termly newsletters and have the opportunity to join in with our publication and research projects.
