Article by Richard Charles Giroux, How Social Media Technology was created, The "Unknown Truths".

Article by Richard Charles Giroux.

As unbelievable as this may sound, am I considered the “father” of social media technology? I suggested and invented the technology for video streaming, multimedia computers & many other media devices, then presented it to most all of the major electronics computer manufacturing companies at the time. Yes, including modern cell phones devices. I am an electronics engineer.

I explained the 7 potential dimensions of a computer to IBM, including Ai up to computers that program themselves to fix issues, now that is a form of intelligence. Ai is not intelligence, but programs that are aware of different types of inputs and have set programming to react. The seventh level was the self-programming computer abilities. Now let's go back in time to learn how it all started, all the way back to the early 1980s.

IBM, Apple, Yamaha, Commodore, Sony, and Motorola were among many of the technology companies I was involved with. Motorola already had the wireless phone, the bag phone, the size of women’s pocketbook, as this was in the early 1980s, IBM had the advanced computer chips for the other things at the time. This interesting history, as well as the other true history of other companies, I cover later in this article.

Yes, paging (texting), the Internet, a camera, computer processing, multimedia streaming, and the size of a small handheld calculator, were all parts of my original "inventive patented" ideas that I had for a modern cell phone device, as well as what the computer would become. My invention of multimedia, multi communications devices was not just for the modern phone but all computer devices.

When I told Motorola about my invention, they said "impossible!" I said, “I just helped reinvent the multi-media computer so not impossible, just work with IBM.” They did, and the rest is history. Of course, I am telling this history a little out of order, but you will understand soon. Funny, it was me that told Intel to put graphic processors inside of the main processor which many do now, but that happened in more recent times. Advanced animations and things are possible with this invention.

Remember, all of my inventions were called impossible by all of the computer companies at that early time, and some even later. The person who creates something creates the actual idea and then solves what it takes to get it done: is the inventor and patent owner.

The touch screen idea, I told IBM if a plastic gun knows where I am pointing on an old tv, a new flat screen should be able to know where I am touching it. I want to entice you a bit first, every stage affected the other stages. The simple fact that the person that hired me to be at IBM that day got a 50,000$ bonus, I guess should have told me something.

I also solved the streaming video issues, one of the most important and world-influencing inventions of mine. store the media before and during the Internet breaks into memory, like a battery stores power. Having enough stored to cover any breaks in the internet signal, as I told IBM. Called buffering now. Imagine social media without videos! The names of processes are not important, but the electronics are.

Internet is not constant, it’s bits and pieces. Streaming any media on the internet was considered impossible. Computers did not handle video back then, just data. When the internet speed got faster, and the streaming technology was installed in most devices, streaming got very popular.

The first Multimedia computer I invented & solved the technology for; I showed IBM. The Amiga 1000, the first multimedia computer which was based on my designs. Half of Apple engineers left the Apple company to make it. I also suggested using gaming technology as they did at Commodore where it was made. The Apple company had turned my ideas down at that time but developed their own versions many years later.

The 25th anniversary of IBM in Vermont was when, and where mostly all of this happened. I was the musical entertainment for the event and gave them my creativity/ inventions on all of this. In 1982. About 500 engineers were at the event from all over the world. The top engineers surrounded me in a circle when I gave them my creations/ inventions.

All videos at this IBM plant had my music in them. Video production technology was relatively new. This plant was one of the main IBM computer processor development/ manufacturing plants for IBM. Called IBM Burlington, but was actually in Essex Junction, Vermont.

IBM and Motorola did develop my modern phone creation. This new modern phone device took 9 years to make. Some of my ideas took many years later. I do not think Motorola told IBM it was my creation. Or did IBM tell Microsoft that this new computer technology was my invention at the start or anytime? By about the year 1997, the modern phone arrived on the market, though got much better ten years later. Do you realize most of my inventions took 20 to 30 years to gain fruition? The audio things took much less time to appear.

When I was giving IBM all the multi-layered processor and multimedia designs that I gave to them. IBM said, “It will be more powerful than our supercomputers!” I said, “But imagine what the supercomputers will be able to do now.”

I had suggested stacking many processors on top of each other and also connecting them vertically. Processor designs looked like a U.S. Road map. This changed the world in dramatic ways forever! Thanks to IBM, but Intel, AMD, and Apple all ended using my “similar” designs. The Amiga 1000, was the first to have things like the "Video Toaster", a device that spawned many others devices after. Changed how all TV broadcasting was done in time. Whole new kinds of technology companies arose out of this.

Who submitted a grant to the New England Foundation for the Arts about creating the “YouTube” like idea? That was not the name I used, but it was reportedly taken by a grant person there to take for himself, then selling it to Google? Two other grant committee members initially told me this back in the late 1980s. I wanted to make a library of my TV series and other videos online. I love and support YouTube now anyway and use it. But these things did influence the birth of all streaming services that happened and followed.

I sent three emails to the "South by Southwest" major electronics event explaining my invention and concept of instant joining & communication with millions, which seemingly was developed into Twitter. It is where Twitter started this. It’s not just a database idea, this instant concept and my video streaming invention are the heart of all social media.

Its instant ability to interact with others is a basic human desire. I felt the need for it on the internet and with devices also. Messages are very time-consuming, and stop the human flow and following of things. It had to be instant. Ever notice a quick call, talking to someone instantly is always better than messages back and forth, much quicker too.

Who gave Sony the advanced CMOS concept of making camera sensors like computer chips are made, by a chemical process, making 4K and 8k possible. I have suggested many things to Sony. My camera CCD sensors dropped pixels often, which was very costly to replace. Sony had pixel concealment. Others did not. CMOS changed everything. It was Sony that perfected it. And it was me that told them what and why to do it.

Who created the first TV series for human rights that most media and big tech imitate? Well, that’s easy. You can go to www.Artvisions.tv to see it. Humanity and human rights should be a basic desire for all of mankind. To respect each other and to be able to communicate with each other on equal terms,

It’s never about the money; it’s the heart and soul of our country and our world. It’s about time people knew more about these insights. Yes, I have evidence. And you will find the lack of its authentic history online. It’s a fact! Just remember all that I am trying to express to you, gain these insights.

I seemingly beat Einstein on the IQ test twice, but only by a little, but they still changed the test afterward. They had it videotaped. They used a very tricky little box that you were timed to figure out how to completely open. Wooden then metal. Being fast and intuitive helped me.

They could not believe that anyone could beat Einstein! Einstein was smarter, I think. But as far as these modern technologies, I feel no one else was better at inventing these important things that all of us depend on every day, and that a better understanding between all cultures can develop with these technologies also, as they did.

You change the world one step at a time and not for selfish reasons, but for everyone else, simple! All the incredible people I filmed for human rights taught me this many years ago. I miss them all too, very much! Again, only the inventor can tell the true story of how anything came about.

Never forget the influences of the real invention of any technology. Every one of you can do what you can with technology because of them. I have written several posts about my inventions and the actual times, ideas, patents, the companies involved, and my true insights in creating them. This article is a compilation of these posts. A combination of my knowledge and insights too.

Do you realize that your modern cell phone would not: be able to take pictures; get online; get your email; stream media; handle thousands of apps, if I had not invented it into it? It took a multimedia/ computer person to invent it. I had an audio recording studio, and a video production facility at the time. still do in fact.

Computers I felt were heading in the wrong direction. A thousand-lane highway, with ten levels of travel lanes, is much better than a two-lane one. Try to fathom this, once we reach the advances, we all take it all for granted. This did not exist in any other way. Do you know of many audio studios that are also video production studios, or composers, or computer engineers? The combination was not common at all, I know of none back then!

Do you realize if I had not gotten Sony to develop the video camera sensors to be made like computer chips are made, a chemical process, that your phones would not be the high-resolution cameras that they are now? Video cameras would not be either.

If I had not told IBM that digital storage should be like digital memory, the SSD, the modern phones could not store even a single picture or email. There is no space for a spinning hard drive in a modern phone. SSD is the heart of any fast computer device today. Any computer engineer knows this. If you slow down one area, the whole device is way too slow.

What about watching videos? When I invented the multimedia computer and video streaming, that made all video streaming possible on all devices. The internet would just be data, like a book. Video brings the human element into things, being able to look into someone's eyes. Seeing things never possible before, and to everyone all over the world at once. A broadcast video recorder cost 60,000$ back then, but your phone records better video now. Are you beginning to see why I tried so hard to make this technology a reality?

Why am I saying all of this? The fact is, all the computer companies said it was impossible and could not be done! Your phone would just be for talking to someone. As it was invented by anyone else to do.

It took a human rights pioneer, an audio/video engineer, a scientist, and an inventor that understood what was needed and what needed to change to make it all happen. Money never buys genius either. Many companies should be appreciated for their enormous efforts in the development and manufacturing of it all this technology.

Another aspect of my technological impact was with Synthesizers and digital workstations. Fact is, these technologies have a lot in common with computers and phones. You can do both on either one now. I gave Yamaha the digital audio workstation invention, told them to use the PCM processing that Sony had in a device used in conjunction with a VHS video recorder. Multisampling I gave to Synclavier, a very expensive digital keyboard made in Vermont. Yamaha ended up using both. The fact was my master piano technician expertise played a big part also.

I do respect all the companies in developing all these devices, platforms, we all should. Just remember why it happened. I am kind of tired of seeing so many films about my technology and its impact on our planet and no one realizes where it came from. Now you should have much more insight into these things after reading this.

The final point, respect the creations of all people, and their impact too. Because I did it for all humanity, not for selfish reasons. Never forget the impacts of all true inventors. Does it matter I was not credited? Well now hopefully more will know more of the true history after this article. Companies that did not create the things they control can lack the proper responsibility in using them. It takes a creative, genius-like mind to visualize solutions/ inventions, it takes a humanity awareness to use it for the proper purposes.

I think your story needs to be turned into a book so more people can learn of how these things happen, and read about your fascinating story! Have you ever considered writing one?
