Article-31 Differences between Inventor and Solidworks

Hello Subscribers,

For the last two-three articles we have been discussing Inventor 2024 Features. In this article, I thought why not discuss the difference between Inventor and SolidWorks which is a widely used CAD modeling application, other than Inventor.

I think putting forward these differences will help professionals to understand the functionality of this two software in more detail

We all know that Solidworks is also one of the widely used software in the Mechanical Industry. Some of the differences are listed below

?Initial 2D Sketching

Autodesk Inventor:?Inventor has an interactive environment in Ribbon that enables using various 2D sketching, 3D modeling, and other features. For example, while using a contour in Autodesk Inventor, closing the contour finishes the sketch line. For a dimensioning tool, this 3D CAD platform offers fewer functionalities. The user also needs to use a few more clicks to add aligned dimensions.

Secondly, when it comes to editing, the sketch geometry causes instability at times. Also, the sketch constraints are less user-friendly.

SolidWorks:?As compared to Inventor, SolidWorks offers some more user-friendly functionalities. For one, while contouring, the user just needs to press ESC or use a double click to finish the line. It also offers advanced functions such as text formatting symbols, comments, etc. for ease of dimensioning. As against Inventor, the geometry remains relatively stable.

In the upcoming article, we will talk more about the features and Assemblies of the two.

I have been with Inventor for 14 years and SolidWorks for 9 years. I do complex automated systems and machines in both environments. SolidWorks is easier to learn but there is a price for it. Inventor is more advanced, especially with big and complex assemblies. There are some advantages and disadvantages in each CAD but I really doubt that text formatting in SW is good and better than Inventor.
