Article 1 - What is Scrum?
Decoding Scrum Guide 2020.
I asked people What is Scrum?
And this is the outcome of the poll I conducted, since there is a confusion on what Scrum is, in this article I am going to explain in detail What is Scrum?
And also, in the series of upcoming articles, I am planning to Decode Scrum Guide 2020, to better understand the Scrum Guide.
What is Scrum?
Scrum is a lightweight framework that helps people, teams and organizations generate value through adaptive solutions for complex problems. (Ref. Scrum Guide 2020. Page 3)
Few thoughts.
Focus on the term Framework. Scrum is a framework. It's not a methodology or a process or a method. Scrum is a lightweight framework.
Scrum is a lightweight framework.
Next questions to ask would be.
Is the Scrum Framework complete?
Short answer is NO, Scrum framework is not complete.
The Scrum framework is purposefully incomplete, only defining the parts required to implement Scrum theory. (Ref. Scrum Guide 2020. Page 3)
I am going to explain this in detail shortly before that here is another question.
Can I adopt only some parts of the framework/can I pick and choose?
Answer to this question is also NO.
So here is the explanation.
The Scrum framework, is immutable. While implementing only parts of Scrum is possible, the result is not Scrum. Scrum exists only in its entirety and functions well as a container for other techniques, methodologies, and practices. (Ref. Scrum Guide 2020. Page 13)

So, what it means.
You cannot alter or pick and choose only parts of the Scrum framework, it is immutable. The Scrum framework is intentionally incomplete. Reason behind this is to give flexibility to the Scrum team to adopt what methods/ methodologies works best for them. Scrum framework does not specify all the steps required to build a product or complete the project, instead it works as a container for other techniques.
The Scrum framework is intentionally incomplete.
Scrum is not stopping you to use other agile techniques, methodologies, and practices, Such as Kanban, Extreme Programming (XP), Scrumban, SAFe or The Spotify model.
Scrum guide suggests, various processes, techniques and methods can be employed within the framework.?(Ref. Scrum Guide 2020. Page 3)
How is Scrum built?
Scrum is built upon by the collective intelligence of the people using it. Rather than provide people with detailed instructions, the rules of Scrum guide their relationships and interactions. (Ref. Scrum Guide 2020. Page 3)
First let’s focus on the term collective intelligence in the sentence.
So, what is Collective intelligence?
Collective intelligence (CI) is shared or group intelligence (GI) that emerges from the collaboration, collective efforts, and competition of many individuals and appears in consensus decision making. - (From Wikipedia)
In simple terms Scrum framework is not developed by one individual or few people, rather it is done by many individuals who is competent in Agile practices.
