The Artefact Research Center - A unique, interdisciplinary approach to open and collaborative research on data and AI

Artefact has officially launched its Research Center, dedicated to establishing an ecosystem centered around real-world problems and data. It connects PhD talents at Artefact with esteemed professors from top universities (Polytechnique, Sorbonne University, and CentraleSupélec, University of Paris-Saclay) and leading enterprises like Orange, Société Générale, Decathlon, and more to join.

This approach is designed to promote an open, collaborative culture, free from the short-term constraints of large corporations. The core of this strategy will be the study, exploration, and development of solutions to address tangible challenges faced by businesses. The knowledge generated will be shared through scientific publications, international conferences, and open-source code. ?

  • This strategic initiative strengthens the collaboration between the academic world and Artefact's major corporate partners, ensuring that research remains at the forefront of AI technologies and addresses complex business challenges. ?
  • By creating and hosting this structure, Artefact seeks to address the sovereignty challenges identified by Bpifrance. The Center has formed a consortium in partnership with Mistral AI, a rising star in French Tech. ?
  • Artefact aspires to shape a future where AI is not only a powerful tool but also ethical, fair, transparent, and tailored to business needs, facilitating its widespread adoption.

Keynote by Vincent Luciani, CEO of Artefact, on the Artefact Research Center, based on globally recognized scientific and academic excellence

The Center’s tripartite research approach will focus on the business issues surrounding the adoption of AI in companies: around AI explicability for example, trust, and sustainability, through the angle of mathematical and management research issues.

The heart of the approach is “sharing”: the methodologies and algorithms will be shared in an open-source approach, with the aim of creating a vocation for progress, not only for the companies Artefact works with, but also for others in the AI sector or even in other industries that may face the same challenges.

“As a modern consulting company specializing in AI solutions, we aim to consistently offer cutting-edge algorithms, tools, and methods to our clients. Frustrated by gaps between our goals and existing research, we initiated this center to dedicate time to address concrete problems that we can’t always allocate resources to. Fortunately, we possess the most valuable asset: data. Without it, there is no AI. Some clients generously share their data for long-term research projects, forming the backbone of our highly applied research center.”

Keynote by Emmanuel Malherbe, Director of the Artefact Research Center, on the tripartite approach bridging the gap between academia and industry applications

The Center’s transversal research approach can address the general challenges of AI, including vital areas such as model transparency, bias and discrimination, and end-user control in order to make AI more trustworthy.

According to Emmanuel Malherbe: “Our mission is to make AI more adoptable, in other words, to increase confidence in AI. What we propose is a tripartite approach to research, where we have the Artefact Research Center with its academics, and a partner company, with Artefact coordinating the research. And in this setup, the partner company brings us the problems to solve - and the data to evaluate and confirm our solutions.”

“The fact that we share our open source code and publications and really contribute to the community makes us very compatible with the academic world.”

Here are seven PhD topics at the intersection of industrial use cases and state-of-the-art limitations that allow us to address the major research areas in a given scenario:

  1. Multivariate Forecasting & pricing
  2. Explainable and controllable scoring
  3. Assortment optimization
  4. AI Adoption in businesses
  5. Data-driven sustainability
  6. Bias in computer vision
  7. LLM for information retrieval
