The Art of Writing: Exploring the Pros and Cons of Teaching Cursive

The Art of Writing: Exploring the Pros and Cons of Teaching Cursive

There’s a hot topic that's been buzzing around classrooms and it’s cursive writing. ?

Let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of this age-old skill in our tech-dominated world.

Advantage 1: Boosting Brain Connectivity ??

Recent research suggests that writing by hand, especially in cursive, enhances brain connectivity.

This connectivity is like a superhighway for our memories, helping us retain information better.

So, while we're all tech-savvy, it seems our brains still appreciate the good ol' pen and paper connection.

?

Advantage 2: Feeling the Shape of Learning ??

Ever wondered why forming letters by hand is crucial for children?

It turns out that physically crafting letters helps them distinguish between similar ones, like "b" and "d."

Feeling the movements of their bodies as they write reinforces the learning process.

Researchers explain that this tactile experience is invaluable in early education.

?

Advantage 3: Connects Students to the Past

If they can’t read cursive writing, students will be kept from many opportunities to read important documents.

Think about it: so many historical documents are written in cursive.?

While some of these documents are readily available online in print form, not all of them are.

?

Disadvantage 1: Digital Takeover ??

In our fast-paced digital era, teaching cursive is facing tough competition?

Countries like Finland have even waved goodbye to cursive writing in favor of teaching typing.

While keyboards are efficient, the concern is whether we're losing something essential in the process—those intricate brain connections that come with writing by hand.

?

Balancing Act: Handwritten vs. Digital Learning ??

While studies encourage keeping the art of cursive alive, it also emphasizes the importance of adapting to technology.

Handwritten notes might enhance learning during lectures, fostering better understanding and memory.

On the flip side, for longer texts and essays, using a keyboard can be more practical.

Finding Harmony in the Write Way ??

In the end, it's all about striking a balance.

As educators, let's embrace technology while cherishing the timeless act of handwriting.

?

Each has its place in the sun, contributing to our students' holistic development.

So, whether you're team cursive or team keyboard, let's keep the joy alive in ESL teaching! ???

I am all for it as long as with start with Letter Formation.Cursive alone won’t change much if the students are struggling with the basics.Howevee.handwriting is crucial & it impacts reading.
