The Art of Wealth Management

The Art of Wealth Management

One must first master the rules in order to break them effectively. A great artist honors the rules of nature, light, shadows, and textures—using these principles to open new pathways for us to see differently what we have already seen. The best of our human creativity has its feet firmly planted in the strict parameters of the original creation. But what does this have to do with wealth management? I'm so glad you asked.

Premise

The practice of wealth management represents thousands of people managing trillions of dollars based on one playbook with three rules: keep the money alive, grow the money, transfer the money. Regardless of how unique your strategy may be, in the end, every manager offers these three activities. To stand out requires wealth managers to be artful with the same paint and brush used by all.

Rudiments

The rudimentary elements of portfolio allocation, diversification, and risk management are akin to the natural light, shadows, and textures available to Picasso and the street corner artist alike. To be artful at a level of mastery, to be Picasso-like when managing money, requires one to focus on its non-monetary value.

Currency of Intent

What is the difference between having more confidence in one professional over another? It is this: understanding. While most people say the beauty of art is "in the eye of the beholder," I say differently. Art, masterful art, is rooted in the ability of the artist to articulate how much they understand the human heart. Great paintings do not project the idea of the artist but rather reflect the ideas of the viewer. In their work, we can see our lives.

Mirror

As a wealth management firm, ask yourself: how many non-monetary services do you offer your client that focus on discovering, advancing, and transferring purpose? How clearly can your client see their reflection, not yours? How artful are you with adding words to your client's wordless places? Are you simply growing their portfolio? If so, you are Blockbuster in a Netflix world.

As discussed in the book, The Spirit of Wealth Preservation, wealth brings with it a wealth of problems—problems money can't solve. You must use the tools everyone uses, but paint a different picture.

Art, masterful art, is rooted in the ability of the artist to articulate how much they understand the human heart.” So profound and true for every profession and field of expertise. This is especially true in the area of “professional training”. Too often the focus of training is on communicating the “tricks of the trade” versus the impact of the field on the “hankerings of the human heart”. Thank you again, Dennis Ross!
