The Art of Visual Thinking

The Art of Visual Thinking

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of hosting a Visual Thinking session with Marion Charreau as part of our “Meet The Expert” dynamic webinar series. With the information fresh in mind, we would like to share with you some intriguing lessons we learnt.

?Marion is a cartographer and co-founder of “The Storyboard Method” and an individual and corporate trainer, using visual communication tools to clarify and organize ideas, energize teamwork, and improve the presentation of information.

?The Visual Thinking methodology consists of landing complex concepts and translating them into simple drawings. In other words. As Marion says: “Drawing is learning to see.”

?Different Visual Thinking techniques can be helpful in different situations to help verbalize ideas. Let’s explain them briefly:

?1.??????Sketchnoting follows a sequence of steps: listen (conceptualize), synthesize (draw & remember). This technique can vary a lot depending on the person performing it. We each have our own way of expressing our thoughts, associating them with mental images.

?2.??????Mind mapping is quite similar to Sketchnoting except for one detail. In the Mind Mapping technique, we will always start from a main idea that we will place in the center of the image. We will place other concepts according to their relationship with that main idea. With Sketchnoting instead, you can start from any idea (s) and place it anywhere.

?3.??????Scribing involves one person only who is in charge of drawing what other people are talking about, let’s say, at a meeting. The person who draws is not part of the conversation but instead visually maps the information that others are conveying to get their ideas out effectively.

?4.??????Graphic recording is used in seminars, workshops, and conferences. In this technique, the facilitator gathers the essence of the information communicated by a speaker or a working group. Plot this information into a paper or digital mural with a combination of graphics such as diagrams, symbols, and writing. Thus, participants have the visual synthesis of what happened at the event’s end.

?Now that you know a little more about the Visual Thinking methodology, there is only one thing left to do, start drawing!

It was a pleasure to talk about visual thinking and it's possibilities as a tool for communication. Capture and clarify thinking, deepen and bring to light ideas are powerful things everybody can do connecting their visual mind with a pencil.
