The art of the transaction

The art of the transaction

As human beings we live our lives and express ourselves through the miracle of communication.

But what is communication really? It is a transaction of thoughts, ideas, perceptions...dreams.

It is fair to say that we become who we are through the exchange of shared beliefs and aspirations. Communication shapes us and helps us define who we are. Moreover, who we strive to become.

It is through the exchange of thoughts with others that we find our true nature. We learn to appreciate relationships. Then we learn how to build and grow them.

Buying vs Selling

Buying and selling are some of the important transactions in our daily lives. It's like breathing in and breathing out. This is what keeps us alive.

Buying comes naturally because it does not require much communication skills. We can literally point or click at things that we want and indicate that we are interested. The rest is a mere transaction.

Selling, however, is much different. Or at least that's the story we tell to ourselves as we attempt to do it. It is a social construct that selling is hard, sleazy and unworthy. It is planted in our minds way before we ever got on the market.

Importance of Mindset

The secret for overcoming this is to remain neutral to bias and our own prejudices. If we focus on value as a seller we become an ally with the buyer even though our primary goals is to sell.

We usually juggle with those roles multiple times a day. Yet we are confident buyers and hesitant sellers. This is because we perceive what we buy as valuable and have no way to establish the same for our clients. Even more so if we don't know them.

This is why communication is ever so important. Although the buyer role is largely considered passive, asking the right questions and stimulating a proper communication with the seller could almost always guarantee you a good deal.

Final thoughts

No matter if we are buying or selling we are all participants on the market as long as we are active. Activity is actually the key that makes the market possible on both ends of the spectrum.

If you are a buyer - don't settle for anything less than your expectations. If you are seller - don't stop prospecting and looking for ways to improve service. It is only through absolute devotion to communication and mutual respect that we could make the market work for everyone's sake.
