Hi Conor. Thank you for joining us today for this interview! We always like to start an interview by asking what brought our guest to art, and we recently added what do you think you would have become if you had not become an artist!?
I think if I had not become an artist, I would have probably become an engineer. I love building things. I love creating things. An architect, engineer. Or maybe even a scientist, who knows? One of my dreams was to build a special safari lodge and use it to protect nature,? to devote my life to conservation. Guess what?! That is what we’re actually doing in the years to come. We’re building one of the most iconic Safari lodges with inspiration from all my patron collectors, close friends and family, who want to share moments in the oasis that we are in the process of building. It will be built in Botswana.
You are originally from South Africa where you grew up, and where you still spend a lot of time. If you had to describe Africa in just a few words, what would those words be? How is Africa different to the other places you have visited around the world?
Africa is like no other place in the world. It's hard to describe it with words. There are no sunsets like those in? Africa. There are no stars like there are in Africa. And there is no energy like there is in Africa anywhere else in the world. Africa is different to other places that I visited because I was born in Africa, so it's deep in my blood, and you can't compare it to anything else. It is sometimes indescribable and sometimes only paintings and photographs can describe it because of its true beauty. It is very sad to see how certain parts of Africa are governed and run, but we hope it changes one day, and can still become and then remain a safe place for people to experience this oasis which I am so lucky to have been able to experience since an early age. Safari is my greatest inspiration in the world.?
There’s something in the air. It’s a smell. The scent of the wild sage that lingers through the evening game, mixed with the rough dust that makes me come alive. It awakens me! Places like this need to be shared with the ones you love; for some reason the love is so powerful out there.? It sits as a? foundation for the future,? for anything that is ever about to be built.?
The giant fig trees along the dry riverbeds that have been standing guard,? protecting us for hundreds of years create this feeling of cool mystery, and are power components which inspire me, which inspire part of my philosophy. The early-morning sound of the lions roaring, and those haunting sounds as the moon rises. They strike you at your deepest. Time stops and nothing else matters, but the power of NOW.?
In the end one has to respect the bush. The bush demands? respect . This is Sacred ground for me, and the dreams within my reality every year. It’s where I go to find the hidden gems within my soul, and recharge my batteries
