How do you deal with pressure or stressful situations?
Here’s another interview question you may feel the urge to sidestep in an effort to prove you’re the perfect candidate who can handle anything.
?But it’s important not to dismiss this one (i.e. don’t say, “I just put my head down and push through it,” or, “I don’t get stressed out”).
Instead, talk about your go-to strategies for dealing with stress (whether it’s meditating for 10 minutes every day or making sure you go for a run or keeping a super-detailed to-do list) and how you communicate and otherwise proactively try to mitigate pressure.
?If you can give a real example of a stressful situation, you navigated successfully, all the better.
Possible answer to “How do you deal with pressure or stressful situations?”
1. “I stay motivated by thinking about the end result. I’ve found that even in the midst of a challenging situation, reminding myself of my goals helps me take a step back and stay positive.
2. “I realize that, as a manager, my response to stress will affect my whole team. My goal would be to model what I’d want my team to do, so I’d openly communicate that there was a high-stress situation and ask if anyone had the time to pitch in and help troubleshooting.”
?You can highlight the key strategies you implemented to manage stressful situations.
Prioritization: I assess tasks and focus on those with the highest importance or most urgent deadlines. This helps me channel energy productively.
Problem-solving: I break down the source of stress into smaller, more manageable components, which allows me to create targeted solutions.
Communication: If necessary, I reach out to my team or supervisor for support and to ensure everyone is aligned on priorities.

Healthy Habits: I maintain healthy sleep patterns, exercise, and take short breaks. This helps keep my mind and body ready to handle challenges. I engage in mindfulness practice to maintain an even temper.
When answering the interview question about dealing with pressure or stressful situations at work, it’s important to provide a structured and thoughtful response that showcases your problem-solving skills and ability to remain composed.
Use the STAR Method: Highlighting Situation, Task, Action, and Result.?Start by detailing a specific situation where you encountered pressure, describe the task you were charged with, elaborate on the actions you implemented to manage the situation, and finish with the outcome of your actions.
1.?? Be Honest: Reflect on your real experiences and think of instances where you successfully managed pressure. Being authentic and sharing your true methods of managing stress is preferable to providing a generic response.
2.?? Provide a Real Example: Talk about a time when you were under pressure, such as a tight deadline or a challenging project.?To maintain calm, organization, and focus, I followed a structured approach. I prioritized tasks, set clear goals, took regular breaks to clear my mind, and maintained a clutter-free workspace. This methodical process enabled me to complete the task efficiently.
3.?? Highlight Your Skills: Explain any special skills or techniques you used to manage the pressure.?This may encompass time management, prioritization, delegation, and even mindfulness practices.
4.?? Stay Positive: Focus on the positive aspects of working under pressure, like how it can enhance your productivity or creativity.?I perceive challenging situations as opportunities for learning and growth.
Here’s an example of how you might structure your response:
“In my previous role, I was once tasked with leading a project with a very tight deadline (Situation). My responsibility was to ensure the project was completed on time without compromising quality (Task). To manage this, I broke down the project into smaller tasks and set milestones (Action). This approach helped me to stay focused and motivated, and by taking regular breaks, I maintained my energy levels. As a result, the project was delivered on time and received positive feedback from the client (Result).”
Remember, the key is to demonstrate that you can not only handle pressure but also thrive under it, turning potential challenges into successes.
Think about the right situation and tactfully handle this interview question to clear the interview.
I help busy executives reclaim their energy levels so they work better & enjoy a healthier life.
6 个月Good article thank you. Yes that example of what not to say ("“I just put my head down and push through it,”) is like the answer to 'name your biggest weakness', "Oh Im guilty of working too hard on things". Sounds like what they want to hear but its actually avoiding the question!
