The Art of Spending

I’ve been crushing on this painting for two months.

I saw it in an art gallery in downtown Venice, Florida on my birthday. I could have bought it then. I had the money to pay cash for it. But my intuition said, “Not yet.”

I snapped a picture of the painting instead. I told the gallery owner I’d be back for it on a future trip.

I looked at my picture often, feeling deep down that this painting would be mine when the time was right.

I didn’t feel desperate for it, or anxious that it might sell. Instead, there was a delicious anticipation for it. Like a mature version of a child waiting for Santa to come for Christmas.

On Monday, while back in Florida, I felt the pull in my heart to go and get “my painting.” Not only was my painting waiting for me, but the price improved by $225!

The lesson?

There is an art to spending money. When you spend intentionally, tuning into both your bank account and your intuition, there’s nothing but pure enjoyment.

It’s like deciding to enjoy a single slice of gourmet chocolate cake, beautifully plated and each bite savored. I call this “Pleasure Purchasing.”

When spending is an art, there is no bingeing, no mindless consumption, no regrets, no wasted dollars.

Other financial gurus might shame you for spending instead of saving or investing.

But spending is a beautiful and necessary part of the natural flow of money. If no one spends money, then no one earns money either. There are two sides to the equation every time an exchange of money is made.
