ART- the sole food for our souls

ART- the sole food for our souls

I was watching Th Bear streaming on OTT and literally felt the anxiety of the main character (what a brilliant production). Behind all the chatter of the now world famous Masterchef series and swarms of food vloggers, being a chef has never being more glamourous than today. So much so that the hardships of the industry is easily camouflaged or left unseen by the consumers of the world, riding the never stopping merry-go-round of the next best thing. Its no joke that on ten percent of the restaurants opening every year survive in business beyond five years. With that kind of statistics, job satisfaction is questionable, no matter how satisfied the consumer is.

This led me to down the rabbit hole of eating out versus eating at home and the saga of nutrtion and nourishment. I recently heard Mr. Addepalli, CEO of Swiggy saying and I paraphrase, home food is hardly the synonym for healthy food. It's the choice of food we intake that is key, right? Whether you choose to eat a high protein quantified meal from a service provider or an unlimited very high carb meal, low on balanced nutrition made at home, either ways the choice lies in the hands of the consumer. And this sounds right. You can, perhaps order the right food everyday. Perhaps, one day we will have a world where growing your own food and having it will not be a novelty and nutritious foods, unadulterated in any manner, can be outsourced and is as affordable as well, but till then we will oscillating between food made at home and take out.

Interestingly, we can't say the same for homes. As much as we try, the evolutionary gene has honed us to create and sustain a space of security for our lifetime and our dear ones.

Architecture of built spaces, specially residences, is like cooking food for nourishment. You can refer any school of thought in any civilization, nourishment is achieved only via constancy of daily routine and habits. You can celebrate and indulge in rich excesses of food periodically in your lifetime, but for a sustainable relationship of body, mind and society, there is no substitute to simple, nutritious food in quantified manner and timely intake. Such are also the elements that make up a nourishing spaces as well. We as humans are wired to depend on the constancy of how the light enters our homestead to create warmth of memories spent with family, how wind flows through the house just enough to play with each other, has enough breadth to scramble around in the yard. Creatures of habit, we are nourished by the habits we keep. We grow and get to keep what we have because pf the lifestyle we have and not despite it. Sustainability of our growth at every level, be it personal, social, career or spiritual is a result of constancy of habits. Habits built upon the dependency and quality of space. The architecture of our lives depend upon the architecture of built spaces. As critical as the quality of air that we breathe in, it is important to pay attention to the quality of our space that we occupy on a daily basis for our well- being.

And that is why, we as professionals of the built space urge our patrons to constantly feed our souls with the nourishment of art and culture and the people who create them. Slowly, over a period of time, such that it may seep into our consciousness, that divinity of human potential that we aspire to enables us to reach heights as well. Like the annual santhe by Chitrakala Parishad Bangalore ,held on Kumarkrupa road, was one such excellent oppurtunity to feast on the unlimited joy of human creation. Unfettered, unlimited, unbound by constraints of a machine ordained life, the Art exhibit cum sale is a celebration of the human spirit. The mere walk down the art trail fills you up with thought, joy and excitement enough to refresh your mind and soul. It undoubtedly provides the seeker with an eye and connection for the artists that call out to your inner wishes. That one canvas or collection of ideas that remind you of the magic of life. And while you've bathed in the feast of colours, take some with you to hold a corner, a wall , or atop a table in your home, this riot of colours and lines which will remind of the joy of living in moments that make up life - a life that this home enables you to sustain.
