In our fast-paced world, the ability to ask the right questions is a superpower. It's not just about asking; it's about asking with purpose, finesse, and a dash of courage. I've recently explored this transformative journey in a two-part series in our Inspiral Growth Blog , and I'm excited to share the highlights with you.
Overcoming Fear
Remember those early years when curiosity was our constant companion? We were fearless questioners. However, as life went on, many of us developed a fear of asking questions. But here's the truth: fear can be a powerful ally if we embrace it as an opportunity to grow.
One of the incredible individuals I had the pleasure of discussing this with is Alejandro Bratti, Human Strategist . He shared a profound perspective on FEAR, which could either mean "Forget Everything And Run" or "Face Everything And Rise." The choice is ours. Fear is not the enemy; it's a signal for growth.
Here are some tips to overcome that fear.
Tip 1: Giving Meaning to FEAR
In Part 1, we delved into strategies to conquer this fear. We explored exercises to identify and overcome fear, including the importance of asking for help.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of hosting David Meltzer on my podcast, where he shared his wisdom on overcoming fear. He introduced a four-step process to identify and navigate fear. David emphasized the significance of reconnecting with our source of faith and aligning our actions with our values. It's about finding our true purpose and letting go of ego-based consciousness. (If anyone out there wants the five daily practices of David, to effectuate clearing the interference, just email David to [email protected] )
Tip 2: The Power of Exercise
David's insights resonated with me on so many levels, and I'm grateful to share them here. He encouraged us to practice ending fear by first identifying it, then redirecting our energy toward a trajectory aligned with our values. It's a powerful exercise in self-discovery.
But the journey for the writing of this article didn't stop there. It continued with an exploration of ancient practices. At a live event in Tallinn with Paul Mckenna, I joined over 700 coaches in learning a breathing exercise from Aikido. It's a simple yet effective technique to reduce stress and refocus our thoughts. This exercise resonated with me because it closely resembled practices I've learned in Kungfu and Taichi.
My sifu, Paul Resnick , has been instrumental in teaching me the art of conquering personal battles. His program, Martial Mind Mastery , goes beyond physical combat; it's about mastering the mind. One of his key teachings revolves around grounding, finding balance through breathing, and utilizing practices rooted in Taichi and Kungfu to overcome fears.
Tip 3: Your Own Warrior, Breathing
These teachings are invaluable in the quest to conquer fear. They highlight the importance of mindfulness, self-awareness, and finding inner balance. Fear loses its grip when we learn to ground ourselves and breathe through life's challenges.
Part 2: The Art of Skillful Questioning
Once we've conquered our fear, we embark on the next step of our journey: mastering the art of skillful questioning. This is where value hacking truly begins.
One of the pivotal figures in this exploration is Simon Sinek, whose book "Start with Why" has been a beacon for those seeking deeper purpose in their actions. Simon's philosophy centers on asking the fundamental question, "Why?" Why do we do what we do? It's a question that can ignite innovation and lead us to our true purpose.
In this second part, we delved into four critical subtopics:

Subtopic 1: The Power of Curiosity
We discussed the importance of curiosity, starting with "Why?" and exploring uncharted territories. Curiosity is the driving force behind innovation. It's about seeing things from different perspectives and constantly seeking to learn and grow.
Subtopic 2: Precision in Questioning
The precision of our questions matters. We learned to avoid forcing respondents into yes-or-no corners and instead opt for open-ended questions. This encourages creativity and exploration, often leading to unexpected answers that drive value.
Subtopic 3: Listening with Intention
In value hacking, active listening is key. Just as researchers have discovered the optimal order of questions can influence responses, so too can it enhance value hacking. Sometimes, it's best to ask the tough questions first. This can make your conversational partner more willing to open up. We discussed strategies for maintaining balance in conversations and asked questions that resonate deeply.
Subtopic 4: The Art of Feedback
The tone matters in the world of value hacking. An overly formal tone can inhibit valuable exchanges. We emphasized the importance of embracing a relaxed conversational style that encourages genuine responses. I shared examples of questions that could help you understand your strengths and weaknesses and cultivate the right tone for your future conversations.
Subtopic 5: Embrace Failure
The value hacking journey isn't always smooth, and understanding group dynamics is essential. Just as group dynamics can influence question-answering dynamics, value hacking requires adapting to various situations. In group settings, individuals tend to follow one another's lead. We discussed strategies for navigating group dynamics and maintaining a focus on value creation.
Subtopic 6: Iteration as a Strategy
Keeping secrets is sometimes part of the business. A startup with a new technology or soon-to-release software must know how to regulate the information they are releasing to the public. We explored the importance of deciding what to share and what to keep private before a conversation begins. It's about striking the right balance between sharing and privacy to foster meaningful connections.
By integrating these topics and teachings into your value hacking practice, you'll develop a comprehensive skill set for crafting impactful questions and responses. This mastery will not only unlock the full potential of value hacking but also enable you to create a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in your journey toward success. Every question is an opportunity, and every response is a step forward in your transformative expedition.
