Art, Science, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D CAD and Additive Manufacturing – All in one place!

Can you combine art with Science, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D CAD and Additive Manufacturing? Yes, Ditte Ejlerskov just did in her art exhibition THE CULT OF OXYTOCIN.

As a woman who loves both art and science, this exhibition took me by storm.

In the 3D printing department of PLM Group A/S, we have been so fortunate to be a little part of helping Ditte reaching her goals for the exhibition.

Let me tell you a little about what we saw, what we experienced, how we got inspired and how we helped.

The Science of hormones

The inspiration of an artist – Ditte Ejlerskov was inspired to do this art show by her own battle with Oxytocin and Adrenalin during giving birth.

Oxytocin - a hormone that’s produced in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream by the pituitary gland – The hormone is also called the happiness and love hormone – hugging for more that 30 seconds can activate this hormone.

Adrenalin is the "fight or flight" hormone that humans produce to help ensure survival. Women who feel threatened during labor may produce high levels of adrenaline. More and more women are working with the possibility to producing more oxytocin than adrenalin during childbirth, making them capable of having a much more pleasant delivery.

Here you see how the artist is showing the battle between the hormones, disguised as a battle between to women – Oxytocin is the woman un top!

But what about Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D CAD and Additive Manufacturing- Where does that fit in? You might think!

Let’s start from the beginning?

THE CULT OF OXYTOCIN can be seen at Nikolaj Kunsthal in the heart of Copenhagen, and when you enter, you are encouraged to have an introduction to art gallery and the area that you are in – Put on the Virtual Reality glasses and have a look or take a ride is probably a better description – And so we all did!

(Battling with adrenalin when exposed to heights, you might want to hold on to something or someone)

?

Entering the actual exhibition, you are exposed to both Augmented Reality, extensive and fun use of 3D CAD files and 3D Prints.

Walking around with your phone in your hand all the time?! No worry's, it is allowed - in fact the artist want you to use it on the QR code on the floor – And you can even try it at home!

Here you see how she used the QR code from the CAD-file and made it possible for the visitors to play around with the sculpture.

Try it out!

In eDrawings Professional for SOLIDWORKS from Dassault Systems you can make AR codes and you can use your phone or eDrawings, to let customers or visitors look at your assemblies, parts or as you see below art – You decide! Try it out right here.

Here you see one of the outcomes of the artist playing around with the 3D CAD files – A simple exploded view of the women Oxytocin and Adrenalin in the 3D CAD program, turned into a large carpet, and now they look like they are almost working/fighting/defending together.?

Another way that Ditte Ejlerskov has been using the 3D CAD files in a new way you will see in the end of the exhibition – She made a beautiful movie using the parts, these are projected on to the sealing of the room you see below, and you are invited to lay down and take it all in.

Want to see it for you self, then you must visit Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen the show runs until the 8th of May 2022.

Where are the 3D Prints?! - I saved the best for last, so that we could get a bit nerdier!

Here they are with Ditte Ejlerskov!!!

The sculptures are 3D printed on a HP MJF 5200 in PA12 Nylon – Normally you would use MJF 5200 for mass production of functional parts, but with the capability to make best-in-class isotropy and fine detail, sharp edges, and textures – we found it perfect it for the sculptures as well.?

Before the actual print, the build was prepared in Magics from Materialise. We always encourage our customers to use Build Preparation Software when using printers like the HP MJF 5200.

After the print, the sculptures were put into our Powershot C from DyeMansion wich cleans the parts in no time.

Using the?DyeMansion Powershot C, up to 75% of a larger SLS or MJF print job can be cleaned in only ten minutes. The time you normally use for cleaning and personnel costs can be reduced in a significant way and therefore improve the efficiency. Learn about the Powershot C right here: https://plmgroup.eu/3d-printing/3d-printers/dyemansion-powershot-c/

After the cleaning it was time to give the sculptures a superior finish – We used the DyeMansion Powershot S for this part of the process. The Powershot S is the leading blasting system for end-use parts and delivers a unique matt-glossy look and pleasant haptics for the sculptures. It does not remove any material and works perfectly for hard plastics like PA12 as the sculptures are made of.

You can learn more about the Powershot S right here: https://plmgroup.eu/3d-printing/3d-printers/dyemansion-powershot-s/

After giving the sculptures to Ditte, she spray-painted them multiple times by hand giving a unique finish.

Very nice article Maria Vemborg and indeed an interesting exhibition. Thank you Ditte Ejlerskov for the big tour around all your art pieces. For me it was very fun to see 3D Printing used as art. #plmgroup #3dprint #cad
