Trust is a Verb: It's About Action

Trust is a mindset and a verb. It's about what you do, not just what you say or think. It's about showing up consistently, communicating openly, and following through on your commitments.

Think of trust as an interconnected muscular system. The more you use the muscles, the stronger the muscles and the system get. And just like any muscular system, it needs regular exercise to stay in shape.

Trust Leverage Points: Activating the Brain's Trust Circuits

In our Trust Master Class, we introduce the concept of "trust leverage points" - specific actions and behaviours that can trigger the brain's trust circuits. These leverage points are like switches that, when flipped, can create a cascade of trust-building effects.

Here are a few examples of trust leverage points, underpinned by the principles of trust:

  • Active Listening (Integrity & Benevolence): When you truly listen to someone, you're not just hearing their words; you're understanding their perspective, validating their feelings, and building rapport. This simple act can have a profound impact on trust.
  • Empathetic Communication (Benevolence): Building on active listening, empathetic communication involves putting yourself in someone else's shoes and understanding their emotions. Given that we are hardwired for empathy, the brain will naturally engage in empathetic responses if we allow it. Research indicates that empathy triggers the brain's trust circuits, fostering deeper connections.
  • Transparent Decision-Making (Integrity): When you're transparent about your decision-making process, you show others that you have nothing to hide. This builds trust by demonstrating your integrity and willingness to be accountable.
  • Collaborative Problem-Solving (Capability & Benevolence): When you work together with others to solve problems, you build trust by showing that you value their input and are willing to share power.

Practical Tips for Building Trust

The Trust Master Class provides a wealth of practical tools and strategies for activating trust in different contexts. Here are a few key takeaways:

  • Start Small: You don't have to make grand gestures to build trust. Small, consistent actions can have a big impact over time.
  • Be Reliable: Follow through on your commitments, both big and small. This shows others that you're dependable and trustworthy.
  • Communicate Openly and Honestly: Share your thoughts and feelings openly, even when it's difficult. Honesty and vulnerability are key ingredients for building trust.
  • Show Appreciation: Let others know that you value their contributions and appreciate their efforts. A little gratitude can go a long way in building trust.

The Trustworthy Mindset

A principle-based approach to trust can be invaluable, as it offers a useful framework for navigating the mass of personal and professional advice out there. These basic principles—integrity, benevolence, capability, and inclination—serve as organising principles that can help you consistently apply trust-building techniques in various aspects of your life.

When you approach life with a trustworthy mindset, you build positive relationships, enhance collaboration, and foster a culture of open communication.

Cultivating a Trustworthy Mindset: Do what is good (integrity), considerate (benevolence), and excellent (capabilities) to enable genuine trust."
