The Art & Science of Naming Your Podcast

When you named your podcast, did you consider if it was already taken? (keep reading and share your answer in the comments when you're done! ??)

This was the question of the morning on today's "Podcasting Morning Chat." Our conversation was sparked by a recent headline from Podnews dated March 8, highlighting the potential reality of overlooking trademark checks in podcast naming...

"A female indie podcaster has won a trademark case against another podcaster who used the same name. On Monday, a judge ordered Canna Campbell to pay AUD$114,000 (US $75,000) in legal costs after infringing the name of Rhondalynn Korolak’s Financial Foreplay podcast. It was registered as a trademark."

?? Why This Matters: Your podcast's name serves as the initial point of contact with your audience, setting the tone and expectations for what's to come. Sure it may seem like it's 'just a title' but it's actually a crucial part of your brand's identity in your audience's mind; consciously or not!

Naming Your Podcast: 3 Key Tips

1. Reflect Your Content: Ensure your podcast name gives a clear indication of your show's theme or genre. It's the first clue your potential audience has about what they can expect.

2. Easy to Remember: A catchy, memorable name makes it easy for your audience to find and recommend your podcast. Avoid overly complex words or phrases that might be hard to spell or recall.

3. Check for Uniqueness: Before settling on a name, do a thorough search to ensure it's not already in use. This includes scouring podcast platforms, social media, and trademark databases. A unique name helps avoid legal issues and confusion in the marketplace.
