The Art and Science of AIX Performance: Firmware, History and More

You asked for it, you got it! My article for October in IBM Systems Magazine starts a series about my own methodology to resolve performance problems; how I think and what I do. Take what I give you, and tailor it to your own environments and needs:

Doing firmware on P series has always been a hard sell. It’s so reliable and that makes all the more difficult. It’s so easy to do now with LPM and decent HMC code , gone are the need for floppy disks like in the P690 days. And you are very correct for small shops, code is at the bottom of the list, generally it’s done when the box is installed and not worried about until it’s time for a refresh

If I've learned anything in nearly twenty years as a performance practitioner, it's you can analyze and tune until the cows come home, and it won't do you a bit of good without current (well, no older than three months) Firmware.
