The Art of Saying Yes: Finding Balance Between Passion and Responsibility

My job is to help clients with their strategy, which often means teaching them the power of saying no—setting boundaries, focusing on priorities, and cutting through the noise to achieve clarity. But this is different. This is about saying yes—not just to work, but to life.

I know you've read articles like these before, but let's make this one different. Let's inspire. Let's challenge ourselves to step out of the routines that bind us and into the moments that remind us why we work so hard in the first place. This isn't about shirking responsibilities or neglecting commitments; it's about realizing that sometimes, saying yes is the most strategic move you can make.

So, here we go. The last few weeks have been a whirlwind—a kaleidoscope of moments that reminded me of the importance of saying yes, not just to the significant, life-changing opportunities but to the small, spontaneous adventures that breathe life into our daily grind. After years of building my career, often putting clients and work first, I've embraced a philosophy I learned during the pandemic: it's okay to put yourself first, as long as you don't lose sight of your responsibilities.

COVID-19 taught many of us that work could often be done from anywhere. For me, "anywhere" became over 70 destinations, from a month-long escape to Carmel, California—where I curated weekly gatherings with friends—to diving headfirst into the vibrant culture of Valle de Bravo and Mexico City during Día de los Muertos. Each trip wasn't just a break; it was a recharge, a chance to reconnect with what inspires me: history, culture, and the simple joy of discovery.

Big Adventures, Bigger Lessons

My travels expanded my horizons in unexpected ways. From the volcanic landscapes of Ecuador to the tranquil waters of the Galápagos and the dense rainforest teeming with life, each experience reminded me how vast and beautiful the world is. These big trips allowed me to disconnect and reflect on how to bring the same sense of wonder and creativity back to my work.

But not every "yes" has to be a plane ticket away. A simple road trip or a long-overdue visit to reconnect with friends has its kind of magic. Seeing people I hadn't connected with in over 10, 15, or even 20 years reinforced the importance of roots, relationships, and the community that shapes us.

Working, Playing, and Growing

Recently, spending Thanksgiving in Key West with friends seamlessly merged work and play. From there, a detour to Art Basel and Art Miami offered a sensory feast of creativity, sparking ideas for how The Proper Group can innovate in approaching client journeys.

The real revelation came last week in Costa Rica, where what began as a casual getaway with a fellow partner with The Proper Group Collective transformed into a deep brainstorming session about accelerating our business goals. We left the trip rejuvenated and brimming with ideas to end the year with impact.

The Power of Saying Yes

Saying yes doesn't mean abandoning structure or ignoring financial realities—it means embracing opportunities that align with your heart and soul. These moments of rest, exploration, and inspiration aren't just indulgences; they are investments in yourself and your ability to give back to others, personally and professionally.

It means allowing your mind, body, and spirit to pause, be inspired, and dream. When you do, the possibilities are endless: new connections, fresh ideas, and countless opportunities to bring that inspiration into your work.

A Challenge for You

When was the last time you said yes to something just for you? It may be time to book that trip, plan a weekend getaway, or even take an afternoon to explore a new hobby. Life will always demand your attention, but remember to carve out moments that remind you why you're here.

Say yes. You might be surprised where it takes you.
