Art at Rebellion

Rebellion's Art Team is made up of over 100 of the most talented and creative staff from across the globe. The team has numerous sub-disciplines to respond to the demands made by our game projects which are developed in-house; everything from the first splash screen, menus, environments, characters, weapons, animations, cutscenes, particles effects… If it’s on-screen, our team has made it.

Recently the Art Team has been making huge strides in the use of photogrammetry to author artwork for upcoming projects. The process itself is well documented, but creating an art pipeline and scaling it up to make enough content for a whole game has taken a lot of time and dedication from the team. We are well supported and have built a photographic studio at our Headquarters where we have constructed our own photogrammetry array for capturing faces. There are no ‘off the shelf’ solutions and we had to build this from scratch, making our own triggering systems and scripts to pull images off the camera array. For environmental work, we have been taking our staff on location both to capture assets with photogrammetry and also for them (and the designers) to get a feel for the places they’ll be recreating. We have a good number of awesome ‘camera kits’ which have everything an artist needs for a day in the field – the fantastic Sony A7RIV camera shooting 63mp resolution, lenses, batteries, ring flash, memory cards etc – and of course, training on how to use it all. We have a dedicated Location Scout who sources location that we can license ranging from private properties, reclamation yards, organizations such as The National Trust and world acclaimed museums such as The Tank Museum; Bovington, and The Royal Armouries. Further to this we often invite historians and specialists into the studio or to accompany our trips to give historical context to our Art and Design staff. Back in the studio, we have some fantastic dedicated servers that can batch process all this data without clogging up artists' own PC’s. Being so well supported and having a team of dedicated technical artists on hand means it’s no surprise that we are already yielding some fantastic results.

The worst thing about all of this is that we’ve been to some amazing places, photographed some awesome items, met some great people and we can’t share any details without revealing details about the location of our next games. Rebellion's Art Team is pushing hard and we’ve got a mountain to climb, but the results are already looking great and it’s an exciting time to be part of something huge.

Thanks for sharing this Josh, I've just shown it to my 11 year old who wants to work in games development and design when he's older. It is great for him to start to understand the various different elements involved in creating engaging and exciting games.
