The art of PUBLIC SPEAKING

The art of PUBLIC SPEAKING

Since as far back as I can recall, public speaking has consistently triggered anxiety within me. Whether it was reading books aloud in primary school or delivering speeches at weddings or funerals, the familiar sensations of sweaty palms, racing heart, and trembling voice always made their unwelcome appearance. Undoubtedly, this has been a point of struggle, but it's precisely this struggle that propels me to strive for improvement.

I've devoted considerable time and resources to mastering public speaking, enrolling in both stellar courses and less-than-stellar ones. Yet, amidst this journey, one key ingredient stands out: practice. There's simply no substitute for getting up on stage or standing before a few people to develop the confidence and presence necessary for effective communication.

When I talk to parents, I often urge them to prioritize public speaking for their children. It's about equipping them with the ability to articulate what's in their hearts and minds, fostering the skill to share their knowledge with others; a mantra I frequently emphasize.

Drawing from my own struggles and growth in public speaking, I've crafted a program called 'The Perfect Public Speaking Programme'. This initiative aims to empower individuals not only to address large audiences but also to deliver compelling presentations to their colleagues or lead effective meetings at work. The invaluable skills acquired in this workshop are truly transformative, and witnessing the progress of participants brings me immense satisfaction. The workshop's interactive nature is where the real magic unfolds, as attendees apply their newfound skills. We delve into aspects like Tonality, Movement, Gestures, and Presence, all of which find practical application in everyday interactions.

For those who've stayed with me through this discourse, here are some golden nuggets on public speaking:

  1. Preparation: This is crucial. Know your topic inside and out. Research extensively, organize your thoughts, and structure your speech in a logical way. Practice your delivery until you're comfortable with the material.
  2. Know your audience: Understand who you'll be speaking to and tailor your message accordingly. Consider their interests, knowledge level, and expectations.
  3. Confidence: Confidence is key to effective public speaking. Even if you're nervous, try to appear calm and composed. Practice deep breathing and positive visualization to help manage any anxiety.
  4. Engagement: Keep your audience engaged by using storytelling, humour, anecdotes, and relevant examples. Make eye contact, use gestures, and vary your tone of voice to maintain interest.
  5. Clarity: Ensure your message is clear and easy to understand. Use simple language, avoid jargon, and organize your speech in a way that flows logically.
  6. Body language: Pay attention to your body language. Stand tall, use open gestures, and maintain good posture. Your body language can enhance your message and help convey confidence.
  7. Listening: Effective public speaking is not just about talking; it's also about listening. Pay attention to your audience's reactions and adjust your delivery accordingly. Be prepared to answer questions or address concerns.
  8. Authenticity: Be yourself. Authenticity is important in connecting with your audience. Let your passion for the topic shine through, and speak from the heart.
  9. Practice, practice, practice: Like any skill, public speaking improves with practice. Take every opportunity to speak in front of others, whether it's in formal settings like presentations or informal situations like group discussions.
  10. Feedback: Seek feedback from trusted colleagues, mentors, or friends. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement and refine your speaking skills.

By honing these aspects of public speaking, you can become a more effective and impactful communicator, whether you're addressing a small group or speaking to a large audience. Get out there and give it a go, SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE!

Great article Ciarán ?? Whilst public speaking is something I've enjoyed since my teens, my belief that I'm good at it has sometimes led to me skipping some of the points you identify and ending up eating humble pie. Like any other skill, whether you have some talent already or not, you can always get better and that takes introspection, humility and lots of practice. Hard work beats talent every time
