The Art of Problem-Solving: Why the Best Companies Excel

The Art of Problem-Solving: Why the Best Companies Excel

Have you ever felt like you're playing whack-a-mole with problems while trying to scale your business? Just as you solve one challenge, another seems to pop up. The truth is, the most successful companies aren’t those that avoid problems, they’re the ones that solve them better and faster than anyone else.

Plato once said, "Necessity is the mother of invention." In business, necessity often takes the form of problems: operational inefficiencies, customer churn, or a stagnating sales pipeline. For companies growing from £1M to £10M in revenue, mastering the art of problem-solving isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s the difference between thriving and just surviving.

My Journey as a Business Coach: Turning Problems into Opportunities

When I first started coaching founders and leaders, I noticed a recurring theme: problems were viewed as roadblocks. Leaders felt overwhelmed, and teams struggled to move forward. I’ve been there myself, leading a business where growth was stalled by recurring challenges. Back then, I thought the key was working harder. I was wrong.

Through my experience, I’ve learned that problems are actually signposts. They reveal gaps in systems, uncover market needs, and provide opportunities for innovation. Once I shifted my mindset, I began to see these challenges as the fuel for growth rather than a source of frustration.

Why Problem-Solving is the Ultimate Growth Strategy

1. Problems Drive Innovation

Many groundbreaking businesses were born from solving specific problems. Airbnb addressed the need for affordable and unique accommodations. Revolut tackled the inefficiencies of traditional banking for travellers. What problems are your customers facing that no one else is solving?

2. Problem-Solving Builds Trust

Customers stay loyal to companies that understand their pain points and offer solutions. A 2023 study found that 86% of consumers are willing to pay more for a better customer experience. Solving problems, even small ones, enhances your brand’s reputation and trustworthiness.

3. It Strengthens Teams

When leaders foster a problem-solving culture, they empower their teams. Encouraging collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking leads to stronger teams and better outcomes.

A 3-Step Framework for Problem-Solving

Here are three actionable steps you can take to sharpen your problem-solving skills and accelerate your company’s growth:

Step 1: Identify the Root Cause

Avoid the temptation to fix symptoms instead of addressing the core issue. Ask yourself:

  • Why is this happening? (And ask “why” five times to dig deeper.)
  • What’s the impact on revenue, operations, and customer experience?

Step 2: Involve Your Team

Your team’s collective intelligence is your greatest asset. Gather diverse perspectives, brainstorm potential solutions, and assess the feasibility of each.

Step 3: Act, Measure, Iterate

Once you’ve chosen a solution, implement it quickly, monitor its effectiveness, and adjust as needed. Problems are rarely one-and-done, iteration is key.

Lessons from UK Entrepreneurs

Some of the most successful UK entrepreneurs have shared valuable insights about solving problems:

  • Richard Branson: "Business opportunities are like buses; there’s always another one coming." Branson’s ability to identify and act on gaps in markets has been a cornerstone of his success.
  • Deborah Meaden: "You can only solve problems if you understand them fully." As a Dragon’s Den investor, Meaden emphasises the importance of listening and researching before acting.

Liam - spot on, so many good nuggets here. If you don't get your team involved are you helping prevent future problems as well? Additionally, I have also found that having good systems documentation with processes defined will also give you a map to leverage when those problems come up. It gives you a place to start. Thanks for sharing.
