Ever found yourself riding high one minute, then crashing faster than a toddler on a sugar rush the next? Well, you’re not alone.
Imagine a sunny Tuesday afternoon, and you’re nailing everything at work. Your coffee tastes like hope, your emails smell of promotions, and even your boss’s usually furrowed brow seems to have taken a day off. But then, the unimaginable happens — your biggest project implodes, the client pulls out, and suddenly, your coffee tastes bitter.
Welcome to the rollercoaster ride called 'Everything Hitting the Fan.' Let's talk about mastering the fine art of the pivot — that graceful dance of quick feet and quicker wits that could just save your bacon when the heat's turned up.
Why the Pivot is Your Greatest Advantage
Life loves throwing crap at us. Jobs get lost, relationships end, Thanos snaps his fingers. When the grizzly curve-balls strike, most of us crumble into a funk of Why me? and It's not fair.
But the highest performers embrace chaos. They look disruptive forces square in the eye and say "You think this is a big deal? Hold my oat milk latte..."
The pivot isn't just about changing directions. It's a mindset of constant adaptation and growth. It's viewing every setback as a launchpad for the next big thing.
When You Get Crushed, Get Scrappy (and Maybe a Little Crazy)
After hitting rock bottom with the mobile dog grooming fiasco, I didn't have time to mope. I needed to hustle up some cash to avoid living in a van down by the river.
Drawing inspiration from the scrambling and ingenuity of indie hackers, I strung together a bunch of random gigs:
None of these randomly assembled jobs promised long-term viability. But they bought me time to craft my next big move.
From Failure to Renaissance Man
As the ragtag revenue streams started adding up, I had an awakening. Why follow the conventional life script of picking one job/career/passion and sticking to it until I retired or died (whichever came first)?
By embracing my inner polymath and cultivating all of my interests in parallel - from entrepreneurship to creative writing to hand modeling - I engineered my own renaissance.
I doubled down on weird:
It wasn't just about making money, though that was crucial for survival. This renaissance mindset liberated me to shed the shackles of deciding on One True Calling.

By giving myself full permission to pursue any interest or opportunity that sparked joy, I stumbled into combinations that set me apart. I became antifragile - not just bouncing back from failures, but growing stronger because of them.
Does Your Pivot Pass These Two Litmus Tests?
While chaos and a bit of crazy can be healthy pivoting fuel, you can't just flail in random directions.
When considering potential pivots, they should meet two key criteria:
By marrying passion and utility, you give yourself the best chance of landing on something sustainable.
My latest pivot? Well...this wacky writing career that's allowing me to express my creativity while hopefully providing some value to you fine humans. Not too shabby!
So Keep Calm and Pivot On, My Friends
Whether it's a pandemic canceling all your plans or a freak storm flooding your basement, life will keep dealing turbulence. You can't control that.
What you can control is your response. Will you succumb to the funk and resign yourself to fate? Or stay agile and view every setback as a launchpad to bigger things?
The path is arduous, with plentiful pivots required. But that constant evolution and reinvention? That's where the magic happens.
Pivoting is an essential skill, whether you’re the CEO of a Fortune 500 company or the ruler of your backyard. Don't let setbacks define you. Embrace the pivot, leverage your skills, and most importantly, have some fun along the way. You never know, your next big thing might be hiding just around the corner, waiting to be discovered.
When everything hits the fan, don't be the one left cleaning up. Be the one who turns it off, changes the game, and maybe, just maybe, ends up with a story that’s even better than the one you started with. So next time your day takes a nosedive, remember: It might just be your opportunity to pivot towards something great.
