The Art of Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a practice that has become key to managing my state of being. However it isn’t a practice I find easy, I have experimented so much over the years and I have found my sweet spot to be no longer than 10 minutes, morning and night.
Now everyone is different, however I wanted to share some tips that have helped me to settle into my daily practice.
- Create the time to do this and commit to it! Part of why I practice morning and night is I do it right upon waking and right before going to sleep. I have attached my practice to a cue to assist with it becoming a habit.
- Find a space where you feel comfortable, I always practice in my bedroom.
- Sit up straight or lie down. I have found it much easier to get comfortable with this by lying down. It helps me signal to my brain that it’s time to recharge.
- Try and make sure any distractions are removed……kids, pets, partners, phone etc. You don’t want anything to interrupt you.
- Your mind will wander and this is normal and perfectly ok. Your breathe is your grounding space, each time your mind wanders, don’t judge your thoughts just simply bring your attention back to your breathe.
- Repeat, repeat, repeat….. there is no art to practicing mindfulness. It’s about experimenting and finding what works for you.
Over time you will start to notice the impact of mindfulness and you will crave it.

4 年Great share and tips, Alana. I recently did a 5 week breathe and meditate course to learn more of the practical ways to benefit from mindfulness. It definitely requires discipline and persistence, but it makes a world of difference to how I go about life in general when I prioritise it. The lightbulb moment for me was when I realised not judging my distraction during meditation was also allowing me to more easily identify negative self talk and stop it in its tracks!

4 年Awesome Alana. I feel a lot of people see mindfulness as just for monks or something to do in a robe with incense burning. I've found the act of being mindful and present so important and it's amazing how you can see it's impact in sport, the military and the corporate world. Learnt a lot about this on the lead up to and during our Atlantic Row at the start of the year :). if you haven't yet, I'd highly recommend the book The Mindful Athlete by George Mumford
