As we prepare for Diwali, homes are filled with the buzz of cleaning, decluttering, and discarding the old. In Indian tradition, this ritual isn’t just about tidying up—it’s about making space for new blessings and opportunities, inviting Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, to fill our lives. In many ways, Diwali's customs are a reminder of the deeper art of letting go, something that goes beyond physical possessions.
Letting go isn’t always easy. Whether it’s a prized item that’s lost its usefulness or a feeling or belief we’ve clung to for too long, saying goodbye can feel uncomfortable, even painful. But just as Diwali encourages us to clear out the physical to make room for new light, we can also look within, asking what mental clutter we might release to welcome something better. In fact, that old fear, those self-limiting beliefs, and those outdated expectations may be taking up space that we need to truly flourish.
One approach to letting go is to look at your “mental and emotional inventory,” much like you would with your home. Is there a habit or mindset you’ve outgrown? It could be a fear of taking risks, or maybe it’s holding onto a past mistake. Just as we sweep away cobwebs, dusting off these inner spaces is an act of self-renewal.
This Diwali, what could you choose to release? If something isn’t adding to your life but instead weighs you down, consider it a sign that it’s time to let it go. You’re making space for growth, joy, and new opportunities. So, here’s to a fresh start—both outside and within. May we all find the strength to let go and welcome in the light.
Happy Diwali, and may your journey of letting go be as enlightening as the festival itself. ?
