We've all heard that herding cats is futile. Yet, as project managers, we face the equally daunting task of juggling multiple feline stakeholders daily. How do we corral conflicting interests, goals, budgets, and opinions into one neat project delivery?
First, we must capture attention. Projects that inspire and align people are more likely to succeed. Articulate the vision clearly and passionately so people want to come along for the ride.
Next, spark interest by connecting goals to intrinsic motivations. Help stakeholders see how their involvement furthers causes and outcomes they already care about. Curiosity and purpose are powerful magnets.
Then, create desire through early wins and quick returns on investment. Demonstrate momentum and celebrate milestones to feed enthusiasm. People commit more deeply when they experience value faster.
Finally, drive action by empowering people to contribute optimally. Facilitate autonomy, mastery and purpose for everyone. Progress depends on all paddles pulling harmoniously together.
The skill lies in maintaining balance amidst it all - keeping our furry friends feeling safe and supported while moving steadfastly towards shared objectives. With care, intention, and catnip, the herd of cats transforms into a prides of lions. Roar on!
