The Art of Interviewing: Creating a Positive and Effective Hiring Experience

Talent acquisition and hiring are both a skill and an art that require multiple competencies. One of the most critical aspects is letting go of the ego that says "I know more than you." Recently, a colleague of mine attended an interview where the hiring manager drilled him with questions, challenging his knowledge and eve

n going so far as to say,

"What else do you know more than What I have read in your Resume? Don't you even know refrigeration cycles? I still know and can write and show you how the refrigeration cycle works."

This approach led to an unproductive interview, killing the conversation before it even began due to the interviewer's poor attitude.

A well-planned interview approach is crucial for creating a positive and productive environment. Here’s how it can be done:

  1. Comfortable Atmosphere: Start by making the atmosphere and scene around the interview very comfortable, so that the interviewee feels relaxed and becomes calm.
  2. Opportunity to Know the Person: The interview should be an opportunity to get to know the person beyond their resume. Be humble, offer clarifications, and seek information to understand their critical experiences and skills.
  3. Probing Skills: Probe into the ways they have handled their projects in the past. This helps to gauge their practical knowledge and problem-solving abilities.
  4. Follow Norms: Follow the rational norms laid out to run an interview. This ensures a fair and structured process.
  5. Win-Win Perspective: See the interview as a win-win scenario, not an "I win, you lose" situation. This helps in building a positive rapport and leaves a good impression, even if the candidate is not selected.

Be an interviewer such that the person remembers you positively, even if you decide not to hire them. They should walk away feeling respected and valued, and still interested in working with you and your organization because of the way you treated them and how you conducted the interview.

"The best interviews are conversations where both parties learn and grow, creating opportunities for mutual success." - Richard Branson
