The Art of the Interview & Essay – R U Ready?

Insight: The Young and the Clueless by Kerry Bunker (A Manager at the Center for Creative Leadership) was featured by the Harvard Business Reviews 10 best reads on emotional intelligence. Among the many valuable insights tendered was the following: “Research has shown that the higher a manager rises in the ranks, the more important soft leadership skills are for success.

It makes sense that the higher the level our responsibility with others, the greater the need for the capacity to understand others, empathize with them and to effectively communicate with them. It seems the authors were addressing interpersonal skills like patience, tolerance, empathy, being a good listener and the like. It’s all about the ability to better engage and collaborate with others.

Discussion: Being clueless can apply to many things including the need to be informed about the importance of preparation and practice with respect to interviews and writing essays. Interviews and essays are all about communication through speaking and writing. Emotional intelligence is all about effective communication through behavior and the interpersonal skills that shape it. Why does any of this matter?

It matters because everybody speaks and writes. However, in this fast-paced changing world of ours there is a new norm which is best described as a fast-paced shorthand communication. This practice overlooks an important reality – our verbal expression and written words tell others about who we are. What do you prefer — to leave things to chance to look smart — or take the risk to look not so smart? How you speak and how you write can create a positive impression. It can make you seem fun, interesting and competent. But it also can make you seem boring, discombobulated or lazy.

If your objective is to influence and persuade others by listening to you or reading your material, make it an enjoyable experience for your audience. That means you have to concentrate the mind and develop what appears to be a currently overlooked skill. Being able to communicate well verbally and in writing isn’t just a nice trait, it is a necessary one. Developing an ease with language and the ability to write in an engaging manner demonstrates your intellectual capacity for achievement. Everybody wants to be associated with someone who has the capacity for success, especially in pursuit of individual and collective goals and objectives.

Be aware more about the use of talent and the management of it to fine tune your skills to generate positive outcomes by improving your ability to communicate.
