The Art of the Humble Brag: LinkedIn’s Not-So-Subtle Achievement Theater

You've seen it. Scrolling through LinkedIn, you stumble upon yet another post, framed with feigned humility but dripping with self-congratulation. "Oh, just a little something I managed to do," followed by an elaborate medal, certificate, or award. Yes, welcome to the world of the LinkedIn Humble Brag, or as I like to call it, "achievement porn".

It's Not A Family Gathering, It's LinkedIn

Remember, LinkedIn is not a cozy family get-together where everyone is just waiting to gush over your latest accomplishments, no matter how minor. This isn't a place where your MS Word mastery is going to have folks breaking into applause or shedding tears of pride. Sure, your mom might celebrate every little thing you do — because, well, she's your mom. But on LinkedIn??

You're amidst professionals, many silently scaling their own mountains of achievements, often without the fanfare. So, if you're expecting a standing ovation for every certificate or tiny milestone, you might be waiting a while. Keep the context in mind; not everyone is here with pom-poms cheering for your every move.

The Art of Underplaying Overachievements

The essence of the humble brag lies in its oxymoronic nature. It's a curious mix of feigned humility combined with a not-so-subtle punch of "Look what I did!" It’s like saying,?

“I can't believe I managed to climb Mount Everest... just another Tuesday!”?

Oh, come on! If you’ve reached a pinnacle (literally or metaphorically), own it. Why mask pride with pseudo humility?

Auntie Achievement and Her Golden Boy

Ah, yes. The boisterous, ever-gushing aunt who never misses an opportunity to highlight her son’s countless achievements. Sound familiar? While it’s a comical trope at family gatherings, do we really need Auntie Achievement's equivalent on a professional platform? This isn’t your high school reunion where you’re trying to outshine old rivals. It’s a network of professionals, hoping to connect, collaborate, and create.

Navigating the Achievement Showcase

Achievements deserve celebration. There's no denying that. But it's the 'how' that matters. Authenticity goes a long way. Sharing genuine excitement, gratitude, or the journey behind your success can be both engaging and inspiring. Instead of "I can’t believe I got this," try "I worked hard for this, and I'm proud."

In the spirit of Bluntness

There’s a fine line between being proud of one's achievements and turning it into a theater of self-adulation. It’s essential to strike the right balance. After all, nobody enjoys endless reruns of "achievement porn" on their feed.

Let's remember, it's okay to shine without the shade of feigned humility. Just keep it real, keep it genuine, and for heaven's sake, keep Auntie Achievement and her golden boy out of it!
