Art Gallery Interview Success Starts Here: Your Support Document Checklist Revealed.

As a Cultural Consultant, if only I had a penny for every artist asking how to find art gallery representation I would be writing this article from my weekend Chateau Pad in South of France.?

But because I believe in sharing my best advice generously, here you will find steps on how to construct your support document?when interviewing with an art gallery.?

WHY IS THIS DOCUMENT IMPORTANT??

I will not address advice on portfolio as it is subject for personal consultation, but rather focus?on documents that will deliver you as a top professional.?

Secondly, running an art gallery is insanely?hard business. If the gallery takes you?on, you are now becoming their investment?and liability.?

Match the energy?and understand the difference between your needs and wants. It is a very different?vibration.

Ultimately, I want you to walk away from that interview leaving the gallery director in whispers "wow, what a talent and business acumen."

So let's jump in, time is precious and you have work to do.?

SUPPORTING DOCUMENT

The purpose of this document is to present you as a professional worth investing in. Every diamond has to have each facet highly polished in order to shine so let's look at each page in detail.?

?

PAGE 1:?

PHOTOGRAPH

Have a professional photograph taken of you. Whether in color or monochrome shot in the setting of your studio with artwork that best captures the essence of who you are and what you are about is perfect. Please take time in considering the perfect look, it will set the tone and primary emotion for the viewer.?

(Under the photographs write; PHOTO: (Name of the photographer, location photo is taken))

ABOUT

This is the only journal-like form of writing you will have to do. This section is to be informative, relevant and little creative ( Creative in form of how it will flow, what you decide to share and in what order)?

Depending on your cultural production: Here are a few elements I want you to share with the business (gallery) you are selling your business services (art and personal brand) to.?

1:?You can open with personal quote (intelligent, relevant sentance or point of view, changing idea that speaks about what you stand for or what 'NEW' you are bringing to the art-world scene)

2: What is your art known for, what is your cultural production about

Please understand whom you are speaking to. Do not bore your audience. You are speaking administrative business mind, so structure it in the way they understand, not how you can communicate it and what is easy.

3: Briefly speak about yourself that is relevant to the context of art gallery business. What are your personal attributes that will benefit the dealer??

Why you create art and about your first works, why you have begun to produce cultural production in the first place.?

This is where you can also include your development, personal journey as an artist, your success story.?

Share the essence of your personality and share your interests that support your production.?

4: Include a second image of your art that is professional and beautiful.

(no blurry, low resolutions or cut of hand with glass of Prosecco in the background of one of your guests)?

Please include under the photograph information such as:?

A: Medium (If work of art is painted on the wall state “acrylic on the wall”… )?

B: Size (Inches first then state measurements in centimetres)

The work of art is measured vertically then measurements follow are horizontal.?

(never measure work of art including frame ) If work of art is framed watercolor of photograph in with white borders you only measure size displayed, never white borders around)

C: Location (The name of the gallery picture if taken, city and country, and year)?

D: Title of the work

E: Photographer: If you know the name of the photographer, give him or her credit.?

EXHIBITION HISTORY

This is pretty self explanatory however I would like you to keep certain structure:?

1: Start with year of your birth, Location?

2: Where do you currently live and work

3: Education (relevant info - your high school diploma is not needed here)?

4: List of Solo Exhibitions first (Year, title of the show, gallery or space name, location)

5: List of Group Exhibitions (Year, title of the show or space name, location)

6: Collections your work exists: (Name of museum/ collection, city, country

7: Awards (Year, name, location)

PAGE 3?

CONTACT

1: Full name/?+ artistic name

2: Website?

3: Social Media (I will write a social media article as there is so much more to unpack however looking at your page includes all of your social media links. Your existing community and following is another supporting factor of your brand identity and likability.)?

4: Contact information (Email, mobile number)

To Conclude...

And here it is. Three pages that are such a great support to make your profile stand out. Yes, you have to work for each element, but this will set you apart from so many when you just present as someone who takes their creativity and business activity seriously.?

Now, go out there and WIN. This is my wish for you. Do comment below what your thoughts are and what were your recent gallery interview experiences.?
